Level 2 Award – Medium Risk Top Person Training (Top Person)(Non-Entrant) Confined Spaces

Practical Training in Wellingborough and Across the UK

Supervising work in confined spaces comes with real responsibility. Even when you’re not the one entering, the role of managing operations from outside is vital. This course gives you the tools and knowledge to take on that job safely and effectively.

We run the Level 2 Award in Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces (Top Person) from our site in Wellingborough, with the option to bring the training to your location anywhere in the UK.

Is this Medium Risk Top Person Training – Confined Spaces (Top Person)(Non-Entrant) course right for you?

If you’re in charge of others working in confined spaces, but you won’t be entering yourself, this course is designed for you. That includes:

  • Site managers and team leaders
  • Health and safety officers
  • Technicians working in utilities, maintenance or infrastructure

It’s particularly suited to anyone acting as the ‘Top Person’ – the one making sure that everyone follows safe procedures before, during and after work in a confined space.

What’s involved in the training?

Over two days, you’ll learn what defines a medium-risk confined space, what the law says about working in them, and what your responsibilities are when overseeing such work. You’ll also get hands-on practice with equipment like gas monitors and communication systems.

Here’s what we cover:

  • Recognising different types of confined spaces and levels of risk
  • Putting safe systems of work in place
  • Using permits and keeping records
  • Checking equipment and making sure teams are ready to enter
  • Knowing what to do if something goes wrong

The training mixes classroom time with real-world tasks, so you’ll walk away confident in applying what you’ve learned.

Assessment and certification

The course includes a written element and practical checks. There’s no final exam – instead, your instructor will observe how you apply what you’ve been taught.

When you finish the course successfully, you’ll be awarded the Level 2 Award in Working in Medium Risk Confined Spaces (Top Person – Non‑Entrant). This certificate is accepted by employers across sectors like construction, water, telecoms and energy.

FAQ – Medium Risk Top Person Training – Confined Spaces (Top Person)(Non-Entrant)

Am I going into a confined space on this course?

Nope. You’re staying on the outside. It’s all about making sure the people going in are doing it safely – you’re the one keeping things under control from the top.

What counts as a medium-risk confined space?

It’s not the worst kind, but still risky. Things like gas, poor airflow, or tricky access. You don’t need breathing gear, but you do need proper systems in place.

Do I need any experience before taking this course?

Not really. As long as your job involves supervising or signing off confined space work, you’ll be fine. We’ll walk you through the rest.

Who exactly is the ‘Top Person’?

It’s the person running the show from outside. You check the kit, handle the paperwork, keep in touch with the team inside, and make sure everyone sticks to the rules.

How long is the certificate valid for?

Three years. Then you’ll need to renew – simple as that.

Where do you run the course?

We’ve got a training centre in Wellingborough, but we also run this course at other sites across the UK. If you’ve got a team, we can come to you.

What gear do I learn to use?

You’ll be shown how to handle gas monitors, comms, PPE – all the things you’d be checking as the person in charge. It’s hands-on, not just theory.

Is this an HSE-approved course?

It meets all the UK regs, including HSE guidance and the Confined Spaces Regs. It’s a recognised qualification – no fluff.

Can we book for a group?

Absolutely. Loads of teams do it that way. Just tell us when and where, and we’ll sort it.
