FAQ – Level 3 Top Person High Risk Training Course

What does “Top Person” mean in confined space work?

It’s the role where you’re not inside the space, but everything happening in there is your responsibility. You’re the one making sure the team’s safe, kit’s right, and the plan makes sense. Basically, you’re in charge of the whole thing.

Is this course only for experienced site supervisors?

No. You don’t have to be a veteran to take this course – if you’ve got some knowledge of confined space work and you’re stepping into a lead role, this is a solid place to build up the skills and confidence you need.

Does this training include permit to work systems?

Absolutely. Understanding how permit systems work – and how to apply them properly – is a core part of the course. You’ll go through examples and get hands-on with how to manage them on site.

Will we be using real confined space equipment?

Yes, 100%. You’ll work with proper BA sets, tripods, harnesses, and comms gear. No theory-only sessions – we make sure you’re confident with the same kit used on actual sites.

How long is the course and what do I walk away with?

It runs for three days. When you complete it, you’ll get a Level 3 Award in Top Person for High Risk Confined Spaces – a recognised certificate proving you’re qualified to supervise safely and legally.

Can this be delivered at our site?

Yes, we deliver this training UK-wide. Got a team? We’ll come to you with all the materials and kit. Or, if it’s just one or two people, you can join a course at our East Midlands centre.

Do I need to renew this qualification?

Most companies expect it to be refreshed every 1 to 3 years, depending on your role and how often you’re involved in confined space work. If you’re unsure, we’ll help you figure out what’s right for you.
