Confined space training in Northampton

Working in confined spaces is not only stressful but also risky and dangerous. That is why it is so important to properly prepare employees for this type of work. Northampton is a large industrial and economic centre. There are many construction sites, installations and sewage systems in the area where there are confined spaces. Training for people working in such conditions has recently become increasingly popular. Not only because of the efficiency of such a person’s work, but also, and perhaps above all, because of their safety.

Why choose our confined space training?

Firstly, we have training centres not only in Northampton but also in other nearby towns. This means that every resident can easily, quickly and conveniently reach us for a confined space training course. Secondly, CPTS LTD is a reputable brand with many years of experience in the industry. This is largely reflected in our highly qualified and experienced training staff. Another thing that sets us apart is that each of our trainers cares not only about the quality of the knowledge they impart, but also about practical skills and a very good, positive atmosphere during confined space training courses.

Why is confined space training so important in the UK?

Because confined spaces can eliminate your margin for error. In open spaces, you have freedom of movement, fresh air and easy evacuation. In confined spaces, the opposite is true.

The most common hazards when working in confined spaces are:

  • limited access and difficult entry/exit
  • poor or no ventilation
  • risk of a hazardous atmosphere: oxygen deficiency, gases, vapours
  • possibility of losing consciousness without warning
  • difficulties with rescue operations and extracting the victim
  • time pressure, stress and working in an uncomfortable position

And now a question worth asking:

Do you really want to enter such a place ‘on a whim’, without preparation?

Exactly.

That is why there are specific regulations in the UK that require training, procedures and competence. We are talking about, among other things:

  • Confined Spaces Regulations (1997)
  • Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)

This is not theory for theory’s sake. These are regulations that have one goal: to get you home safe and sound.

Who are confined spaces courses Northampton for?

This training is for you if:

  1. you enter manholes, chambers, sewers, tanks, tunnels
  2. you work on water, sewage, gas, industrial and technical installations
  3. you carry out inspections, cleaning, servicing and maintenance
  4. you are a foreman, supervisor or ‘top person’ and are responsible for people
  5. you work in maintenance, facility management or industry

What will you learn during the confined space training?

We will not overwhelm you with dry theory. Of course, we discuss regulations because you need to understand them, but we focus on real-life situations at work.

During the training, you will learn, among other things:

1) Risk assessment before entering

This is something that many people overlook, and then disaster strikes.

You will learn how to recognise:

  • the risk of low oxygen levels
  • the presence of gases and vapours
  • chemical and biological hazards
  • the risk of being buried, flooded or trapped
  • situations where entering without following the procedure is asking for trouble

The best operator is the one who can decide not to enter when conditions are unacceptable.

2) Safe entry and exit

Yes, this is also a skill.

You practise entry/exit procedures using equipment such as:

  1. harnesses and harnesses
  2. tripods and safety systems
  3. winches and evacuation devices
  4. gas detectors and atmosphere monitors
  5. team communication and liaison

There is nothing worse than a situation where someone enters and the rest ‘will figure it out somehow’. They won’t.

3) Emergency plan and rescue operations

There is no room for chaos in confined spaces.

You learn:

  • what a sensible rescue plan looks like
  • how to divide roles within the team
  • how to react when someone is weakening or losing consciousness
  • how to cooperate with external assistance
  • how evacuation and rescue of the victim works

And note, because this is important:

In confined spaces, most tragedies happen when someone tries to ‘rescue a colleague’ without safety measures.

4) Documentation and compliance with requirements

In the UK, paperwork is also important, but not for the sake of paperwork. It is simply because documentation is part of risk control.

We discuss, among other things:

  • permit-to-work
  • supervision rules
  • equipment inspection
  • communication and reporting

What confined spaces courses are available in Northampton?

The choice of training level is extremely important, as different rules apply to simple entries and to work in hazardous atmospheres or with breathing apparatus. Below are the most popular options:

Low-Risk Confined Spaces (1 day)

For low-risk work. You will learn the basics: the definition of a confined space, risk assessment, use of equipment (gas detectors, harnesses, communication) and entry and exit procedures.
The certificate is usually valid for 3 years.

Level 2 Medium-Risk Confined Spaces (2 days)

For medium-risk environments. You will learn about atmosphere monitoring, ventilation, team roles (entrant, controller, standby), supervision and evacuation procedures.
The certificate is usually valid for 3 years.

Entrant & Controller – Medium Risk (2 days)

For people who enter confined spaces and control access at the same time. You will learn about permit-to-work, equipment setup and emergency procedures.

Top Person – Medium Risk (2 days)

For people supervising work from outside. You will focus on the duties of the top person, documentation, equipment control and team management.

Level 2 High-Risk Confined Spaces (usually 2–3 days)

For high-risk work involving difficult conditions and advanced procedures, including working with BA (breathing apparatus), evacuation and rescue.

Level 3 Rescue & Recovery (2 days)

For rescue teams and those responsible for recovering victims. You will learn how to plan operations, command, use equipment and transport victims safely.
