Understanding the differences between tracked and wheeled types, how they move, how they’re controlled, and how to prep them. - Safety, Always
Running checks before you get in, staying aware of what’s around you, and working with others safely. - The Actual Work
Digging, lifting, grading, backfilling – nothing staged, just real working tasks. You’ll do the kind of things you’d be doing on an actual job. - Keeping It Running
How to keep the machine in good shape. Spotting issues early, doing quick fixes, and making sure the excavator is shut down safely.
Course Format
We don’t run one-size-fits-all courses. The amount of time you’ll need depends on how much experience you’ve got coming in:
- New to machines: around 10 days
- Some experience: between 4–6 days
- Experienced, but not certified: possibly just 2–3 days
- Retaking or brushing up: 1-day refresher
It all ends with a CPCS technical test. Pass that, and you’ll get a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, valid for 2 years.

Do I need previous experience to take the A59 course?
No, you don’t. Whether you’ve never operated a digger before or you’ve already got some expe-rience on site, we’ll make sure the course fits your level. We’ll have a quick chat before you start to figure out what’s best.
How long does the CPCS A59 course take?
If you’re starting from scratch, it usually runs for about 10 days, including the CPCS test. If you’ve used machines before, you might only need a few days. It really depends on where you’re starting from.
What type of machine will I be using?
You’ll be learning on both tracked and wheeled 360° excavators – the full-size ones used on proper construction sites. Nothing scaled down or simulated.
What do I get after passing the course?
You’ll earn a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, which is valid for two years. It’s recognised across the UK and shows you’ve had formal training on 360° excavators.
Is the course delivered in Wellingborough?
Yes, the training takes place at our site in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. That said, we’ve had people travel in from all over the UK, and it’s never a problem. If you’re coming from further afield, just let us know – we’ll do what we can to make it easier.
Is it all theory or do I get hands-on training?
It’s mostly hands-on. You’ll be working on the machine a lot – digging, lifting, backfilling – stuff you’ll actually do on a real site. We do cover some theory, but we keep it straight to the point and useful.
How much does the course cost?

Do you help with CPCS test preparation?
