Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Tracked Loading Shovel A22 Course

Who should take the Tracked Loading Shovel (A22) course?

This course is perfect if you’re:

  • brand new to operating tracked loading shovels and want a proper foundation;
  • already working with tracked machines but need formal training or to refresh your techniques;
  • aiming to add a recognised CPCS qualification to your CV so you stand out on site;
  • keen to improve your safety, efficiency, and confidence behind the controls.

What will I actually learn on this course?

You can expect a practical curriculum that fully prepares you for real-site work. You’ll cover:

  • how to carry out pre-start safety and maintenance checks;
  • understanding all relevant controls, terminology and functions of a tracked loading shovel;
  • how to manoeuvre over different terrains (uneven ground, inclines, confined spaces);
  • tasks like loading, unloading, placing materials, stockpiling and forming ramps;
  • how to shut down safely and move the machine for transport;
  • emergency procedures and best practices for keeping everyone around you safe.

How long does the A22 course take, and what’s involved in terms of theory vs practical?

The course runs over five days and offers a balanced mix of classroom (or theory) sessions plus hands-on practice. You’ll spend a good portion of time physically operating the machine, but there are also vital theory components so you understand why you do what you do—rules, safety, handling, environment. This ensures you’re not just doing tasks, but doing them properly and safely.

What qualification do I receive when I complete it, and what does it enable me to do?

On successful completion, you’ll get the CPCS Tracked Loading Shovel A22 qualification. This gives you the Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, which shows you have the core skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate safely under training. It’s valid for two years. From there, you have the pathway to upgrade to the Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card, often through completing an NVQ-level assessment.

Where can I do this course with your company (CPTS)?

With us, here at CPCS Training Courses (CPTS Ltd). We run this A22 training at our Wellingborough centre (Airfield Road, Wellingborough, NN29 7XA) and often arrange training and assessments in locations around the UK if there’s sufficient demand or if you’re part of a company wanting onsite delivery. Just reach out, tell us where you are, and we’ll see how best to accommodate.

What are the entry requirements? Do I need prior experience?

To join, you’ll need:

  • a valid Health, Safety & Environment test (CITB or equivalent) usually passed within the last two years;
  • a reasonable level of spoken and written English (so you can understand theory and instructions safely);
  • suitable PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the practical sessions;
  • in terms of experience, you don’t have to have prior tracked loading shovel experience if you’re a beginner — that’s part of what the course is for. But if you do have some experience, you’ll progress more quickly.

How much does it cost, and is funding or payment assistance available?

We aim to keep pricing transparent. We’ll give you a full quote when you enquire, including any additional costs (PPE, tests, etc.). We also offer finance options to help spread the cost. For employers, there may be CITB funding or grant programmes available which reduce the cost or subsidise part of the training. We’ll explain what you’re eligible for when you get in touch.
