Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CSCS Green Card?

The CSCS Green Card is officially known as the CSCS Labourer Card. It is designed for people carrying out labouring duties on UK construction sites.

The card shows that you have met the basic health and safety requirements for site labouring work and hold the required training or qualification for this card type.

Who needs a CSCS Green Labourer Card?

You may need a CSCS Green Labourer Card if you carry out general labouring work on a construction site and your employer or site contractor requires you to hold a valid CSCS card.

The Green Card is not intended for skilled trades, supervisors or managers. Those roles usually require a different CSCS card linked to the correct occupation and qualification level.

Is the CSCS Green Card the same as the Labourer Card?

Yes. The CSCS Green Card is commonly called the Green Card, but the official card type is the CSCS Labourer Card.

It is for labouring occupations only, so it is important to make sure this is the correct card for the work you do on site.

What do I need to get a CSCS Green Card?

To apply for a CSCS Green Card, you normally need an accepted health and safety qualification and a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test pass for Operatives.

You will also need to complete the CSCS application process and provide the required evidence for your Labourer Card application.

What course do I need for a CSCS Green Card?

Many applicants need to complete an accepted health and safety qualification, such as a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or another CSCS-approved alternative.

CPTS can help you understand which training route may be suitable before you apply for your CSCS Green Labourer Card.

Do I need to pass the CITB HS&E Test for a Green Card?

Yes. In most cases, you need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives before applying for a CSCS Green Card.

The test checks your knowledge of health, safety and environmental issues on construction sites and must usually be passed within the required timeframe for your application.

How much does a CSCS Green Card cost?

The official CSCS card application fee is currently £36 when applying directly through CSCS.

This does not include the cost of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, training courses, qualifications or any additional support services you may choose to use.

How much does the CITB HS&E Test cost?

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test currently costs £23.50.

This fee is separate from the CSCS Green Card application fee and any course or qualification costs you may need before applying for your card.

How long does it take to get a CSCS Green Card?

The timescale depends on whether you already have the required qualification and whether you have passed the correct CITB HS&E Test.

Once your application has been approved by CSCS, the physical card should usually arrive within five working days.

How long is a CSCS Green Card valid for?

A CSCS Labourer Card is usually valid for five years, but you must continue to meet the current CSCS requirements when applying or renewing.

If your card is close to expiry, you should check the latest renewal requirements before booking a test or course.

Can I renew my CSCS Green Card?

Yes, CSCS Green Labourer Cards can usually be renewed if you still meet the current requirements for the card.

You will normally need evidence that you work as a labourer and a CITB HS&E Test pass from within the last two years.

Can I work on site as soon as I pass the CITB test?

Passing the CITB HS&E Test does not automatically give you a CSCS Green Card.

You still need to apply for the card, provide the required qualification or evidence, and wait for your application to be approved by CSCS.

Can CPTS help me get my CSCS Green Card?

Yes. CPTS can help you understand the CSCS Green Card route, prepare for the required training and get guidance on the CITB HS&E Test and Labourer Card application process.

If you are unsure where to start, our team can help you choose the correct next step based on your current experience and site role.
