IPAF Scissor Lift Training at Construction and Plant Training Services
Have you ever struggled with an awkward, unstable ladder while trying to reach a high fixture on site? If so, you’ll know why a reliable scissor lift is such a game-changer. Here at Construction and Plant Training Services, we run an IPAF Scissor Lift Training Course that helps participants master the safe use and daily maintenance of these versatile aerial platforms.
What the Course Covers
Our approach to training is not only theoretical but also practical. From pre-start machine checks and routine inspections to emergency procedures. During the training we ensure that you understand and know how to operate your scissor lift in accordance with industry standards and manufacturers guidelines. We will discuss safety measures with you, show you how to manoeuvre in tight spaces and highlight the differences between electric and diesel powered machines. By the end of the course you will have the knowledge and skills to work on both flat surfaces and uneven ground.
Earn Your CPCS Card
Once you’ve passed the training and examinations, you will be awarded a CPCS card. The certification is recognized all over the United Kingdom, and regardless of your application, be it in construction, maintenance, or facilities management, you’ll have evidence that you’re competent to use a scissor lift safely.
Why Focus on Scissor Lifts?
You may wonder why these particular machines are so important. Scissor lifts – often called MEWPs (Mobile Elevating Work Platforms) – are often essential for tasks at height, both indoors and outdoors. Their hydraulic lifting mechanism allows the platform to extend vertically, creating a stable work surface. Once you’ve tried one out, you’ll understand why many professionals prefer them to traditional ladders or scaffolding.
Practical Skills You’ll Gain
Conducting thorough walk-around inspections before each shift.
Identifying and mitigating potential hazards (such as poor ground conditions).
Controlling the lift smoothly when raising, lowering, and steering.
Applying correct emergency shutdown and rescue procedures.
Our seasoned instructors weave real-life stories into the training. You won’t just grasp the fundamentals of controls and checklists; you’ll also master the art of tackling surprises – like a storm brewing or a sudden blackout. Are you ready to face the unexpected?

FAQs – IPAF Scissor Lift Training (East Midlands & UK)
What’s this scissor lift course actually for?
If you’ve ever had to go up high on site, you’ll know ladders don’t always cut it. This course is about using scissor lifts – those platform things that go straight up and down. You’ll learn how to handle them properly, keep them safe, and use them by the book.
Is this the same as a MEWP course?
Sort of. MEWP just means Mobile Elevated Work Platform – and scissor lifts are one type. This course sticks to the ones that lift straight up, not the ones that swing out or boom. If you’re working inside buildings or on flat ground, this is probably the one you want.
Do I need to know anything before coming?
Not really, no. Some people show up with no clue, others have used lifts before but never done the ticket. Doesn’t matter – we start from scratch and go over everything in plain terms.
How long does the training take?
Just one day. You’ll get a bit of classroom stuff, then some hands-on time with the lift itself. There’s a short test at the end, and if all goes well, you’re certified.
What will I learn during the course?
Stuff like:
doing daily checks before using the lift
driving it safely – up, down, turning
spotting dodgy ground or other hazards
what to do if the thing stops working mid-air
how electric and diesel lifts differ
Our trainers also share proper site stories – what actually happens, not just the textbook version.
Do I get a card or ticket when I pass?
Yep. You’ll get either a CPCS card or an IPAF PAL Card, depending on what’s needed. Both are valid across the UK and prove you’re trained to use scissor lifts the right way.
Is this training available in East Midlands?
Definitely. We run regular courses in:
Nottingham
Leicester
Derby
Lincoln
Northampton
We also travel to client sites across the East Midlands if there’s a group to train.
Is the card valid everywhere?
Yes – your IPAF or CPCS card is good for five years and recognised on construction and industrial sites all over the UK. After that, you’ll just need a refresher.
What kind of jobs need this?
Scissor lifts are used in loads of places – warehouses, construction, electricians, fit-out crews, maintenance teams. Basically, if you’re off the ground and not on scaffolding, there’s a good chance you’ll use one.
What’s the price like?
It depends – where, when, and how many people. But we keep our prices competitive, especially around the East Midlands. Give us a call or fill in the form for a quick quote.
