NPORS N013 Pivot Steer Truck Course – Bendi and Flexi Training

Pivot steer trucks make it possible to work in aisle widths that would restrict many conventional forklifts. Their articulated steering also creates a different set of handling characteristics, particularly when entering an aisle, approaching racking or travelling with a load.

The NPORS N013 Pivot Steer Truck Course provides the knowledge and practical training required to operate this type of lift truck safely. It is suitable for machines commonly referred to as Bendi, Flexi or articulated forklifts.

Training can be arranged for complete beginners, experienced operators requiring formal assessment, existing forklift drivers moving to a pivot steer truck and operators who need refresher training.

What Is a Pivot Steer Lift Truck?

A pivot steer lift truck is designed to handle and stack palletised loads in restricted warehouse spaces. Its articulated steering arrangement allows the truck and mast to turn into a racking position while using considerably less aisle space than many standard counterbalance trucks.

Although Bendi and Flexi are commonly used names, they refer to particular makes of articulated lift truck. NPORS N013 is the operator category covering the pivot steer truck type rather than one individual manufacturer.

The way these machines steer can initially feel unfamiliar, even to an experienced forklift driver. Training therefore covers the truck’s articulation, rear-end movement, stability, visibility and correct positioning before candidates begin more demanding load-handling exercises.

What the NPORS N013 Course Covers

The programme combines relevant theory with supervised practical training. Course content is adapted to the machine, attachments and working environment but normally includes:

  • operator responsibilities and the hazards associated with lift truck operations;
  • using the manufacturer’s handbook and understanding capacity information;
  • identifying the truck’s main components and their functions;
  • steering, driving, braking and hydraulic controls;
  • pre-use inspections and the correct procedure for reporting defects;
  • safe mounting, dismounting, starting and stopping;
  • travelling with and without a load;
  • manoeuvring in open areas, narrow aisles and confined spaces;
  • assessing the work area before beginning a task;
  • load weight, load centres, truck capacity and stability;
  • approaching racking and positioning the truck correctly;
  • lifting, transferring, stacking and de-stacking loads;
  • loading and unloading suitable external transport;
  • fitting, adjusting or removing approved attachments where applicable;
  • safe parking, isolation and end-of-shift procedures.

Candidates also practise maintaining adequate clearance from racking, structures, pedestrians and other workplace traffic. The exact exercises will reflect the truck and facilities available for the course.

Training for Novice and Experienced Operators

Novice Pivot Steer Truck Training

The novice route is intended for candidates who have little or no previous lift truck experience. Training begins with the basic operating principles before progressing to controlled manoeuvring and load handling.

A full novice programme may run for five days when delivered at the maximum Szkolenie NPORS ratio. Candidate numbers, individual progress and the practical setup can affect the final timetable.

Szkolenie dla doświadczonych operatorów

An experienced operator route may be appropriate for someone who has regularly used a pivot steer truck but does not hold suitable evidence of previous accredited training.

Experience should not be assumed from job title alone. CPTS will review the operator’s background before recommending the appropriate amount of instruction and assessment.

Conversion and Refresher Training

Operators trained on counterbalance, reach or another lift truck category may require conversion training before using a pivot steer truck. The course focuses on the differences in steering, stability, visibility, positioning and load handling.

Refresher training may be recommended following a period away from operating, a change in working practices, an accident or near miss, or where unsafe habits have been identified.

Who Should Take the N013 Course?

The course is suitable for people who operate or are expected to operate pivot steer lift trucks in:

  • warehouses and distribution centres;
  • manufacturing facilities;
  • logistics and fulfilment operations;
  • retail storage facilities;
  • loading and despatch areas;
  • builders’ merchants and industrial premises.

It may also be suitable for employers introducing Bendi or Flexi trucks into an existing fleet and requiring their operators to convert from another category.

Course Duration and Candidate Numbers

Course duration depends on previous experience, the selected training route, candidate numbers and the equipment available.

The published NPORS N013 standard specifies a five-day novice programme at the maximum practical ratio of three candidates to one instructor and one truck. A shorter programme may be appropriate for experienced, conversion or refresher candidates following an assessment of their existing ability.

CPTS will confirm the recommended route and timetable before the booking is finalised.

NPORS N013 Assessment

Candidates must demonstrate both knowledge and practical ability. Assessment may include:

  • questions covering safe operation and operator responsibilities;
  • completion of a pre-use inspection;
  • identification of relevant controls and components;
  • controlled travel with the truck laden and unladen;
  • manoeuvring in restricted spaces;
  • accurate lifting, transferring, stacking and de-stacking;
  • safe shutdown and parking procedures.

Successful candidates must complete the required elements of the NPORS category test. Passing the assessment confirms performance on the training and testing date, but employers should continue to monitor operators in the workplace.

Karta NPORS i opcje rejestracji

Successful candidates can be registered for the relevant NPORS operator category.

For warehousing, logistics and other non-construction environments, the NPORS Traditional Operator Card is normally the most relevant route. Traditional registrations can be issued for three or five years, as agreed between the operator or employer and the training provider.

Karta NPORS/CSCS routes have separate requirements and are intended for operators working in construction where a card carrying the CSCS logo is required. CPTS will help confirm the appropriate registration route before the course is booked.

An Karta NPORS is evidence of training and successful assessment. It does not replace an employer’s responsibility to provide site-specific instruction, familiarisation and authorisation.

On-Site Pivot Steer Truck Training

NPORS N013 training can be delivered at the customer’s workplace where suitable facilities are available. This allows candidates to train with the truck, racking layout and operating conditions they are likely to encounter during their normal work.

For on-site delivery, the employer will normally need to provide:

  • a serviceable pivot steer lift truck;
  • the manufacturer’s handbook and relevant inspection records;
  • a safe area separated from normal workplace activity;
  • suitable palletised loads;
  • appropriate racking or another agreed stacking facility;
  • any PPE required by the site.

CPTS will review the proposed arrangements before confirming that the location is suitable for training and testing.

Training may also be available through our Wellingborough centre, subject to the machine and course setup required.

Why Book Pivot Steer Training with CPTS?

Every course is planned around the candidate’s actual level of experience rather than placing novice and experienced operators onto the same programme.

Our approach provides:

  • NPORS-accredited training and testing;
  • novice, experienced, conversion and refresher routes;
  • practical instruction using the relevant truck type;
  • on-site training for businesses across the UK;
  • clear advice about the appropriate NPORS registration;
  • training dates arranged around operational requirements where possible.

Whether you call the machine a pivot steer, Bendi, Flexi or articulated forklift, the important point is that the operator understands its handling characteristics and can use it safely in the intended working environment.

The course may be suitable for warehouse, logistics, manufacturing and distribution employees who operate pivot steer trucks. It can be arranged for novices, experienced operators, candidates converting from another lift truck and operators requiring refresher training.

Czy muszę mieć wcześniejsze doświadczenie w obsłudze wózka widłowego?

No. A novice training route is available for candidates with little or no previous lift truck experience. Operators with relevant experience may be eligible for a shorter experienced, conversion or refresher route after their background has been reviewed.

Do I need a forklift licence before taking N013?

No. There is no universal UK forklift licence. Employers must ensure that operators receive adequate training for the equipment they use, and the N013 course can provide the relevant training and assessment for the pivot steer category.

What does the Pivot Steer Truck Course cover?

Training covers operator responsibilities, the manufacturer’s handbook, controls, pre-use checks, stability, laden and unladen travel, confined-space manoeuvring, lifting, load transfer, stacking, attachments and safe end-of-shift procedures.

How long does the NPORS N013 course take?

The published NPORS N013 standard lists a five-day novice programme at the maximum training ratio. Experienced, conversion and refresher routes may be shorter, depending on candidate ability, numbers and the practical arrangements.

What does the NPORS N013 assessment involve?

The assessment checks the candidate’s knowledge, pre-use inspection and practical operating ability. Candidates may be required to travel laden and unladen, manoeuvre in restricted areas, handle and stack loads and complete safe shutdown procedures.

How many candidates can attend the practical course?

The published practical training ratio is normally a maximum of three candidates to one instructor and one truck. Final group arrangements will depend on the selected training route and the facilities available.

Can Pivot Steer Truck training be delivered at our workplace?

Yes. On-site training can be arranged where a suitable pivot steer truck, safe training area, palletised loads and appropriate stacking facilities are available. CPTS will review the proposed setup before confirming the booking.

What equipment is required for on-site N013 training?

The site will normally need a serviceable pivot steer truck, its manufacturer’s handbook, relevant inspection records, suitable loads, a segregated operating area and appropriate racking or another agreed stacking facility.

Is a pivot steer truck the same as a reach truck?

No. A pivot steer truck uses an articulated steering arrangement to position the truck and forks in restricted aisles. A reach truck uses a different chassis and load-handling system, so the operating techniques and training categories are not interchangeable.

Can a counterbalance or reach truck operator use a pivot steer truck?

Previous lift truck experience is useful, but it does not automatically demonstrate competence on a pivot steer truck. Additional conversion training and assessment may be required because the steering, visibility and positioning characteristics are different.

How long is an NPORS N013 registration valid?

An NPORS Traditional registration may be issued for three or five years, as agreed with the operator or employer. NPORS/CSCS registrations have separate qualification and validity requirements, so the correct route should be confirmed before booking.

How much does the NPORS N013 course cost?

The price depends on candidate numbers, previous experience, course location and the equipment and facilities available. Send CPTS these details to receive a quotation for the appropriate training route.
