S029 is often booked when an experienced operative or team leader is about to take on formal supervisory duties. At that point, knowing how to complete the job is no longer enough. The supervisor also has to brief other people, check that agreed controls are being followed and deal with problems before they develop into incidents.

Who Is S029 Intended For?
This course is aimed at people who supervise construction workers, subcontractors or individual site activities.
It may suit:
- Working supervisors and foremen.
- Experienced operatives moving into supervision.
- Team leaders with responsibility for other workers.
- Small contractors supervising their own workforce.
- Supervisors coordinating plant, deliveries or specialist trades.
- Employers training several frontline supervisors.
Previous site experience is important. The programme deals with legislation, site documents and supervisory decisions, so it is not designed as an introduction to the construction industry.

Course Duration and Format
S029 contains 15 hours of training.
The programme is tutor-led and classroom-based. Depending on the course arrangements, it may include discussions, written exercises and examples based on situations found on construction sites.
Full attendance is required. The timetable, assessment arrangements and identification requirements will be confirmed before the course begins.
S029 is a site safety course. It does not include a practical plant operator test.
What Will You Study?
The course brings together the subjects a supervisor may need when monitoring day-to-day construction work.

Understanding the Supervisor’s Role
The supervisor is normally closer to the work than the project management team.
That means they are often the first person to notice that the planned method no longer fits the conditions. A different machine may have arrived. Access could be restricted, another contractor may have entered the area or the weather may have affected the task.
The supervisor needs to know what can be dealt with directly and what should be referred to a manager, safety adviser or specialist.
They also need enough authority to stop work when there is a serious risk. Keeping a task moving is not the priority when the agreed controls are missing or no longer suitable.
RAMS and Site Briefings
Risk assessments identify hazards and the precautions needed to control them. Method statements explain how the job should be carried out.
A supervisor may be responsible for explaining this information to the workforce and checking that it has been understood.
Collecting signatures is not the same as delivering an effective briefing. Workers should know what they are expected to do, which controls apply and who to speak to when something changes.
RAMS may also need to be reviewed during the project. Supervisors should not create an improvised method simply because the original plan no longer works.
The task may need to pause while the risks and working arrangements are reconsidered.
Monitoring Work on Site
Supervision continues after the morning briefing.
Conditions can change during a shift. A barrier may be removed for a delivery, materials can block a pedestrian route or an excavation may be affected by further work or poor weather.
Checks may involve:
- Access and housekeeping.
- Edge protection and work at height.
- Excavations and services.
- Plant operating areas.
- Pedestrian and vehicle segregation.
- Equipment inspections and records.
- PPE and task-specific controls.
Certain statutory inspections must be completed by a competent person. S029 helps supervisors understand what should be checked and when a problem needs to be escalated, but it does not qualify them to carry out every specialist inspection.
Dealing With Unsafe Work and Incidents
A worker may report damaged equipment, a missing guard or a method that cannot be followed as written. How the supervisor responds will influence whether people continue raising concerns.
Unsafe conditions should be dealt with rather than recorded and forgotten.
Where there is an immediate danger, the area or task may need to be stopped. Other problems can require corrective action, additional supervision or a review of the planned method.
The course also considers accidents, near misses and RIDDOR.
An investigation should look beyond the final action taken by one person. Poor planning, unclear instructions, unsuitable equipment or pressure from the programme may also have contributed.
Plant, Vehicles and Lifting Work
Supervisors may work around delivery vehicles, excavators, telehandlers, dumpers and lifting equipment.
They should understand the importance of pedestrian segregation, controlled reversing, suitable loading areas and trained vehicle or plant marshals.
Operator cards form part of a competence check, but they are not the only consideration. The person may still need site authorisation, information about local hazards and familiarisation with different equipment.
Lifting work requires suitable planning, equipment, accessories and competent people. The level of planning should reflect the lift.
S029 provides supervisory awareness of these requirements. It does not replace training for an Appointed Person, Crane Supervisor lub Slinger/Sygnalista.
Work at Height, Excavations and Temporary Works
Work at height may involve scaffolds, ladders, mobile towers, MEWPs or incomplete structures.
A supervisor may need to check that the planned access is available, edge protection remains in place and required inspections have been completed.
Excavations bring different concerns. These can include ground stability, safe access, nearby plant, spoil placement and underground services.
Temporary works also require defined responsibilities and appropriate control. A general supervisor should not assume that completing S029 qualifies them for a formal temporary works appointment.
Occupational Health and Welfare
Not every construction hazard causes an immediate injury.
Dust, noise, vibration, asbestos and repeated manual handling can affect workers over a much longer period. The controls set out for the task need to be used and monitored.
PPE may be part of those controls, but it should not automatically replace extraction, suppression, segregation or a safer method of work.
Supervisors should also recognise poor welfare arrangements. Toilets, washing facilities, drinking water and rest areas need to be suitable for the workforce using them.
Ocena i certyfikacja
Candidates must attend the complete programme and meet the course assessment requirements.
Successful participants receive the relevant NPORS S029 Construction Site Safety Supervisor certification.
The NPORS Construction Site Safety Scheme has been approved and mapped by CITB, allowing eligible employers to consider applicable grant arrangements. Courses within the scheme are recognised by Build UK.
Individual employers and principal contractors may still set their own training requirements. Check the project specification when a particular course is named.
Is NPORS S029 the Same as SSSTS?
NPORS S029 and CITB SSSTS are separate supervisor safety courses.
Both contain 15 hours of training and cover many related construction safety subjects, but they are issued through different schemes.
Do not assume that they will be treated as interchangeable on every project. Where a contract, employer or principal contractor specifically asks for SSSTS, confirm whether S029 will be accepted before booking.
Does S029 Provide a CSCS Gold Supervisor Card?
Completing S029 does not automatically result in a CSCS Gold Supervisor Card.
The Gold Supervisor Card requires a construction-related Supervisory or Technical NVQ or SVQ at the level specified for the applicant’s occupation. Applicants must also pass the appropriate CITB Specialist Supervisory Health, Safety and Environment Test.
The qualification varies according to the role. For example, an Occupational Work Supervisor and a Building Site Supervisor may require different NVQ pathways.
The card application is made separately through CSCS.
S029 or S033 Refresher?
S029 is the full 15-hour supervisor course.
NPORS S033 is a 7.5-hour refresher for eligible people who have previously completed suitable supervisor-level training.
A current supervisory job does not automatically make someone eligible for S033. Send us the name and date of your existing certificate before booking so that the correct course can be checked.
Training in Wellingborough or at Your Workplace
The course is available at our Wellingborough training centre in Northamptonshire.
Closed company courses can also be delivered at suitable premises across the UK. Workplace delivery normally requires a quiet training room, suitable seating, presentation equipment, welfare facilities and uninterrupted attendance for the full programme.
Company training can be useful where several supervisors need the course and the employer wants discussions to reflect its normal type of work.
