Telehandler courses in Leicester. Learn to judge the lift before you touch the boom control
A telehandler can look reassuringly simple from outside. Four wheels. A cab. A telescopic boom. Usually a pair of forks. Sit in the operator's seat and the picture changes quickly. Reach changes capacity. Ground changes stability. The load changes the machine's behaviour. People can disappear into blind areas. Suddenly there is rather more to think about.
That is exactly why proper telehandler training for Leicester operators should teach far more than driving forwards, reversing and raising a pallet.
Construction and Plant Training Services provides CPCS and NPORS routes for candidates from Leicester, including Podnośnik teleskopowy CPCS A17 oraz NPORS N010 Ładowarka teleskopowa. Additional competence may be needed if you intend to operate a 360 degree slew machine or handle suspended loads.
Five questions are more useful than asking for any telehandler ticket
Somebody on site may simply tell you to get your telehandler licence. Fair enough. That is how people often describe operator cards in everyday conversation. Unfortunately, it still does not tell you exactly which training you need.
Is the machine a conventional fixed telescopic handler or does its upper structure slew through 360 degrees?
What maximum boom height and machine type will you actually use?
Will you normally carry loads on forks or will you also work with suspended loads?
Has your employer or principal contractor requested CPCS, NPORS or another accepted training scheme?
Are you genuinely a novice or can you demonstrate recent and relevant telehandler operating experience?
Get those answers first and choosing the correct telehandler course in Leicester becomes much easier.
Not sure whether you need A17, A77 or NPORS N010?
Tell us which machine you expect to operate and what your employer has requested. If you know the make, model, maximum lift height and whether the machine rotates, include those details too.
It is much better to identify the right category before paying for training than discover the difference when somebody checks your card on site.
A growing city gives a telehandler operator very different places to work
Leicester is not developing in one direction or around one type of project. The city's newly adopted Local Plan deals with central brownfield regeneration, strategic housing areas, employment land, transport infrastructure, universities and existing neighbourhoods.
For a plant operator this matters. A large housing development on the city edge does not behave like an urban project next to existing streets. A waterfront site presents different constraints again.
No training course guarantees employment on any development mentioned here. They simply show what construction and regeneration around Leicester actually look like in 2026.
Leicester plans substantial growth inside the existing city
Leicester's Local Plan was formally adopted in June 2026 and guides development up to 2036.
Within the Central Development Area the plan provides for 6 178 mieszkań i co najmniej 40 000 metrów kwadratowych powierzchni biurowej.
Much of this central growth is intended to make use of brownfield land. That creates exactly the kind of environment where delivery management, limited manoeuvring room, surrounding buildings and pedestrian movements can become as important as the lift itself.
Ashton Green gives the city a very different construction environment
Ashton Green near Beaumont Leys is a major housing led mixed use development promoted by Leicester City Council.
Up to 3,000 homes are planned there. In March 2026 the Council confirmed planning approval for a further 441 homes on a 38 acre site and reported that more than 1,400 homes were then in development across the wider scheme.
Large phased developments evolve constantly. Early plots can have generous working room. Later phases bring completed roads, occupied houses, compounds, delivery vehicles and several trades into the same area.
Regeneration also happens inside established Leicester neighbourhoods
In July 2026 Leicester City Council appointed a construction partner for the £18.8 million redevelopment of Stocking Farm.
The scheme includes 50 new energy efficient family council homes, improvements to five existing maisonettes and new community facilities on the 3.34 acre site.
Working in an established neighbourhood creates another set of practical considerations. Access, deliveries, surrounding residents and limited separation between construction activity and normal city life all need active management.
Waterside puts regeneration beside the River Soar and Grand Union Canal
Leicester Waterside covers around 60 hectares between the River Soar and the city centre along the A50 corridor.
The adopted Local Plan continues to identify Waterside as a regeneration area and supports the creation of a mixed urban neighbourhood around the waterfront.
Sites around waterways add another consideration. Ground conditions, drainage, access constraints and neighbouring development need careful thought before heavy plant starts travelling or lifting.
Leicester Railway Station demonstrates constrained transport construction
Leicester City Council developed a major station gateway project with Network Rail and East Midlands Railway, supported by £17.6 million from the Government's Levelling Up Fund within an approximately £22 million scheme.
The plans include remodelling the entrance and creating a new public gateway around the historic station.
Current council monitoring records the station programme as a complex project with its forecast completion date still to be confirmed. That distinction matters. It would be misleading to present an old target date as though nothing had changed.
Leicester's current planning strategy can be checked through Leicester City Council's adopted Local Plan.
A telehandler is not simply a forklift with a longer mast
This is an easy mistake to make when you first see one. The forks look familiar and the job often involves pallets. Then the boom extends and everything becomes more interesting.
Extending a telescopic boom changes the relationship between the load and the machine. The operator therefore has to think about several things together rather than concentrating only on the weight printed on the pallet.
Weight
You need reliable information about what you intend to lift. Guessing becomes a particularly poor strategy when the load will be placed at height or reach.
Zasięg
The machine's rated capacity varies with its configuration. A weight that can be managed in one boom position may not be permissible in another.
Ziemia
The surface must support the machine and load in the intended working configuration. Soft, sloping, uneven or unstable ground can turn an ordinary lift into a serious problem.
Load position
Correct fork spacing and proper engagement matter. Supporting a load badly can alter its stability and how forces act through the machine.
A competent telehandler operator does not ask only whether the machine can lift the load. The operator asks whether this machine can lift this load to this position from this ground condition safely.
Which CPCS telehandler category applies to your machine?
Current CPCS Category Information published by NOCN in March 2026 separates A17 into different endorsements. It also confirms an important change that still catches people relying on older webpages.
Przemysłowe teleskopowe
This endorsement covers the industrial telescopic machine type within the A17 category.
Do 9 metrów
A17B is the current CPCS endorsement covering telescopic handlers up to 9 metres.
Wszystkie rozmiary z wyjątkiem obrotu o 360 stopni
A17C is the broad fixed telehandler endorsement that covers all sizes while excluding machines with 360 degree slew.
Obciążenie zawieszone na terenie równym
CPCS lists suspended load work on non rough terrain separately as A17E.
Wózek teleskopowy z obrotem o 360°
A rotating telehandler belongs to a different CPCS category. The current March 2026 CPCS document explicitly states that the former A17D has been superseded by A77.
Current CPCS documents are available from NOCN CPCS.
CPCS A17 telehandler course for Leicester candidates
Uchwyt teleskopowy
Practical and theoretical preparation for safe load handling and the CPCS technical tests.
For many construction workers looking for conventional telehandler training near Leicester, A17C is the category they are most likely to encounter because it covers all sizes excluding 360 degree slew.
The current CPCS A17C training standard is considered to contain 70 procent lub więcej szkolenia praktycznego.
That is appropriate. You can understand the words longitudinal stability, load centre and rated capacity while sitting at a desk. You only begin turning those ideas into operating judgement when you work with the machine.
What should you learn?
- Identify the main machine components, operating controls and safety systems.
- Carry out pre operational checks and recognise defects that require action.
- Use steering, transmission and braking controls correctly.
- Understand how longitudinal and lateral stability change during work.
- Set the forks so that they support the load correctly.
- Read and apply rated capacity information for the required height and reach.
- Check that ground conditions can support the total machine weight in the planned configuration.
- Use stabilisers and levelling systems correctly where the machine is equipped with them.
- Travel laden and unladen while maintaining appropriate observation.
- Retrieve, transport and place different loads accurately.
- Shut down, isolate and secure the telehandler correctly.
NPORS N010 telescopic handler training
Uchwyt teleskopowy
Practical operator training for novice and experienced candidates.
NPORS N010 provides another route into formal telehandler operator training.
CPTS teaches subjects including legal responsibilities under LOLER and PUWER, machine inspections, load charts, safe working loads, major components, manoeuvring, load placement, attachments and communication with slingers or signallers.
The official NPORS training and testing ratio document currently publishes a five day novice course duration for N010 Telescopic Handler with a maximum novice training ratio of three learners to one instructor and one machine.
There is another detail worth knowing before booking.
The current CPTS prices page lists its rough terrain telescopic handler novice programme as four days. Because this differs from the general NPORS N010 novice duration published by NPORS, ask CPTS which programme, learner profile and certification route apply to your booking.
Hiding that discrepancy would not help anybody. Checking it before the first training morning will.
- Machine components and safety systems.
- Pre start inspections.
- Load charts and safe working loads.
- Movement over suitable surfaces.
- Retrieving and placing loads.
- Attachment security.
- Communication during lifting activity.
- Safe end of shift shutdown.
What goes through a good telehandler operator's mind during one load cycle?
It is tempting to reduce the job to pick it up, drive there, put it down. In reality, a useful working cycle begins before the forks touch the load.
Look at the destination first
Know where the load needs to finish. Check the route, ground, access, height, reach, nearby people and any overhead hazard before creating a problem halfway through the journey.
Establish what you are lifting
Find the load weight and consider its dimensions, stability and centre of gravity. An unusual long or uneven load deserves more thought than a familiar compact pallet.
Check the rated capacity
Compare the load with the machine's capacity information for the intended boom height and reach. A headline maximum capacity is not permission to lift that weight in every boom position.
Position the forks properly
Adjust the spacing to support the load. Approach accurately and avoid supporting the load only on the fork tips.
Retrieve the load smoothly
Engage it correctly, lift only as needed, retract the boom and configure the machine for controlled travel.
Travel with observation
Keep the load in an appropriate travel position and continuously check where people, vehicles and structures are around the machine.
Reassess before extending the boom
The final lifting position deserves another look at the surface, machine level, obstructions, pedestrians and required reach.
Place instead of drop
Use smooth hydraulic movements. Align the load correctly, lower it under control and make sure it is properly supported before withdrawing the forks.
Why carrying a load on the fork tips is such a poor habit
CPCS training material discusses a situation commonly described as undercutting. This occurs when the load is inadequately engaged and supported towards the ends of the forks.
Why should an operator care?
Because the position of the load's centre of gravity relative to the machine matters. Moving the load farther forward can reduce the machine's available rated capacity and make the load less stable.
The forks are there to support the load properly, not merely to catch enough of it to get moving.
This becomes even more important as boom extension increases. Poor load engagement combined with greater reach is exactly the sort of combination an operator should avoid creating.
Does a standard telehandler ticket cover suspended loads?
Never assume that because a telehandler can physically accept a lifting attachment, your existing operator training automatically covers the work.
A suspended load can swing and move relative to the telehandler. Load stability, lifting accessories, centre of gravity, ground conditions, wind and communication with a slinger or signaller all become particularly important.
Current CPCS information identifies A17E Suspended load on non rough terrain separately within the A17 category.
CPTS also offers NPORS N138 Ładowarki teleskopowe – ładunki zawieszone for operators who already understand normal telehandler operation and need to develop competence for suspended load duties.
What actually causes the most serious telehandler accidents?
The Health and Safety Executive gives a remarkably clear answer.
HSE states that most fatal and serious injuries involving telehandlers happen while a machine is moving and strikes a pedestrian, particularly while reversing, or while the machine is podnoszenie i przewracanie się.
That instantly explains why a competent operator needs much more than good joystick control.
HSE says construction sites should segregate pedestrians and telehandlers, provide safe traffic routes and ensure that telehandlers are carefully selected, maintained and operated by trained drivers.
Widoczność z tyłu
Reversing creates a significant hazard. Appropriate visibility aids and, in some circumstances, a signaller may be needed.
Front right blind area
HSE specifically warns that some boom positions can create a significant blind area towards the front right of the machine.
Unstable ground
Sloping, uneven and unstable ground can make telehandler operation dangerous. Rough terrain capability does not mean unlimited terrain capability.
Raised load travel
HSE says moving with a raised load is dangerous and should be avoided.
Excessive speed
Cornering too quickly can contribute to overturning. Suitable site speed limits should form part of traffic management.
Piesi
People and plant should not be expected to negotiate the same uncontrolled route and simply hope everybody sees everybody else.
Załączniki
The attachment must suit the machine and task. Changing attachments can also affect lifting capacity and operating behaviour.
Kompetencje operatora
HSE says the driver should be trained, competent and authorised for the specific telehandler being used.

Need to train several operators from a Leicester company?
Tell us how many people need training, their experience, the telehandler type and the certification your business requires.
For suitable NPORS arrangements, workplace training can also be discussed where the correct machine and an appropriate safe training area are available.
Is a telehandler licence legally required in Leicester?
People regularly use the words telehandler licence, ticket and certificate to describe proof of plant operator training.
In legal terms the situation is more precise.
HSE confirms that there are no government issued licences for workplace transport.
Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 requires employers to ensure that operators receive adequate training so that they are competent to use the machinery required for their work.
HSE also states in its lift truck guidance that there is no such thing as a lift truck licence. Certificates and operator cards nevertheless provide useful evidence that somebody has received relevant training and achieved the required operating standard.
Therefore, if an employer asks you for a telehandler licence in Leicester, clarify which recognised card, scheme and machine category they actually want.
Do you need a car driving licence?
Not simply to operate plant within a workplace.
HSE states that there is no legal requirement for a plant operator to hold a road driving licence unless the vehicle will be driven on the public highway. Public road use is subject to separate road traffic law.
Passing basic training is only one part of becoming useful on a real site
HSE guidance for rider operated lift trucks describes three stages of operator development.
Szkolenie podstawowe
This develops the core practical skill and knowledge needed to operate the relevant type of lift truck.
Specjalistyczne szkolenie zawodowe
Training then deals with the actual machine, attachments, loads, operating conditions, workplace rules and tasks that the operator will encounter.
Szkolenie wprowadzające
Finally the operator applies those skills under normal workplace conditions and appropriate supervision, becoming familiar with the employer's site layout, procedures and activities.
This is why one operator card does not magically make every telehandler, attachment and construction site identical.
What happens after you pass a CPCS telehandler test?
The current CPCS Scheme Booklet issued in March 2026 shows the operator pathway through relevant training, the appropriate Health, Safety and Environment test, CPCS theory test and CPCS practical test.
Karta wykwalifikowanego operatora
It is the training stage of the CPCS operator route.
Competent Operator Card
The current CPCS booklet states that the Karta kompetencji operatora jest ważna przez pięć lat.
Moving from Trained Operator to Competent Operator requires the relevant vocational qualification.
Jak długo trwa szkolenie z obsługi ładowarki teleskopowej?
There is no honest single answer for every candidate.
The machine category, scheme and your existing competence all matter.
Do not choose an experienced route merely because it is shorter.
If you still have to work out where the parking brake is while somebody is explaining a load chart, you are probably not ready for a test only route.
Can a Leicester employer receive CITB support for telehandler training?
Potentially, yes.
CITB currently includes several telescopic handler standards within its plant grant system. These include all sizes excluding 360 slew, all sizes including 360 slew, industrial telescopic, suspended loads and machines up to 9 metres.
These telehandler standards are currently placed in Plant Tier 2.
Current CITB grant rates for Tier 2 are £630 for eligible novice training and £300 for eligible experienced training.
This does not mean every individual can simply book a free course.
Eligibility rules apply. CITB states that training must meet the relevant standard, lead to an appropriate CSCS logo card and be delivered through the required approved training arrangements. The employer must also meet CITB registration requirements.
Current conditions can be checked on the CITB Plant Standards and Grants page.
Can a complete beginner learn to operate a telehandler?
Tak.
CPTS states that its Leicester provision accepts absolute beginners and its A17 course is open both to people new to machinery and experienced construction workers.
There is nothing embarrassing about admitting that you have never operated a telescopic handler.
In fact, it makes training easier because the instructor knows exactly where to begin.
You can learn controls, machine checks, steering modes, fork positioning and simple load handling first. Then you can gradually add greater reach, different ground conditions and more demanding placement exercises.
Is the CPTS telehandler training centre actually in Leicester?
The current CPTS Leicester page markets training to candidates from Leicester but lists the following physical address.
Wellingborough
NN29 7XA
Wielka Brytania
Airfield Road is in Wellingborough rather than Leicester.
Therefore, this page should be understood as telehandler training for Leicester candidates, not as a claim that the main CPTS training ground is physically within Leicester.
The dedicated A17 page also states that most CPCS telehandler training takes place at the Wellingborough centre.
NPORS N010 can additionally be discussed for workplace delivery where there are sufficient candidates, suitable equipment and a safe training area.
Always check the venue on your individual joining instructions before travelling.

Before booking your Leicester telehandler course
- Ask the employer which training scheme they accept. Do not assume CPCS or NPORS without checking.
- Identify whether the machine is fixed or 360 slew. This changes the CPCS category.
- Check the required maximum machine category or endorsement. A17 contains more than one endorsement.
- Tell CPTS if suspended loads will form part of your work. Additional training may be relevant.
- Describe your experience accurately. Operating another type of plant is useful experience but it does not automatically make you an experienced telehandler operator.
- Confirm the current course duration. This is particularly sensible because current published NPORS and CPTS duration information is not identical.
- Confirm the physical training venue. The main CPTS centre serving Leicester candidates is in Wellingborough.
- Read all joining instructions before travelling. Bring the identification, PPE and other items specified for your course and assessment.

Pracodawcy muszą zadbać o to, by operatorzy przeszli odpowiednie szkolenie i posiadali kompetencje niezbędne do obsługi maszyn wymaganych do wykonywania ich pracy.
Widelce powinny prawidłowo i równomiernie podtrzymywać ładunek.
Praca z ładunkami zawieszonymi wymaga dodatkowej wiedzy i kompetencji.
