Telehandler operator training for Rushden

Telehandler courses in Rushden for people who want to understand the lift, not merely move the levers

A pallet of blocks is waiting beside the delivery vehicle. The bricklayers need it farther across the site and several metres above ground. The telehandler is standing ready. It sounds simple until you start asking the questions that actually matter.

How heavy is the load? How far must the boom extend? Can the ground support the machine in that position? Are the forks set correctly? Who is walking behind you? Can you still see the right hand side of the machine once the boom rises?

That is what professional telehandler operation really looks like.

CPTS provides CPCS and NPORS telehandler training for candidates from Rushden and the surrounding North Northamptonshire area. Beginners can learn from the start while operators with genuine recent experience can discuss an appropriate experienced route.

Rushden is changing

A town shaped by shoe factories is now facing an entirely different period of growth

Rushden has an unusual character. Its traditional centre still carries the architectural fingerprints of the town's extraordinary growth as a boot and shoe manufacturing centre. Move towards the A6, however, and the scale changes completely.

New housing, strategic expansion, roads, green infrastructure and employment development are increasingly important parts of Rushden's future.

For a plant operator that contrast is useful. It shows why the same telehandler cannot be operated with one fixed mindset on every site.

A machine working within an established urban area may have little room to manoeuvre. A machine on a strategic housing site may have more space but changing ground conditions. Work near public routes creates another problem again.

Then there is the extraordinary level of regional investment taking place immediately beyond North Northamptonshire.

2,700 homes planned around Rushden East

Rushden East will create an entirely new edge to the town

North Northamptonshire Council identifies Rushden East as a Sustainable Urban Extension on land east of Rushden and the A6 bypass.

The strategic development is intended to provide around 2,700 homes, including affordable homes and housing for older people.

The plans go much further than housing. They also include employment opportunities, offices and industrial premises, two local centres, schools, a town park, open space, community facilities and new connections into the Greenway network.

Imagine how the working environment changes as a project like this progresses. Early earthworks may provide wide operating space. Later the same broad development contains roads, drainage, completed homes, delivery vehicles, other trades and pedestrians.

450 homes east of the A6

Another major housing site sits beside the A6 and Bedford Road

North Northamptonshire Council's current housing land assessment records outline consent for up to 450 dwellings on land east of the A6 bypass and Bedford Road.

The consent also covers a community, retail or health facility, improvements to the A6 and Bedford Road roundabout, pedestrian and cycle provision, drainage, landscaping and open space.

The Council's assessment anticipates construction starting after the current detailed planning stages. These dates remain forecasts rather than guarantees.

What is interesting for an operator is the mixture of activities. Housing construction, drainage, road access and landscaping require materials to move through the site at completely different stages of development.

2026 Neighbourhood Plan update

Rushden is also planning changes inside the existing town

Rushden Town Council published its updated draft Neighbourhood Plan and Town Centre Design Code in 2026.

The work considers town centre improvement, movement, accessibility, parking, heritage, important views, gateways and the quality of future development.

Rushden's centre contains a significant amount of late Victorian and Edwardian fabric associated with its industrial expansion.

Working around established streets and historic buildings is very different from moving pallets across an empty development plot. Space becomes precious and interaction with vehicles and people needs more planning.

2025 new Greenway access completed

Rushden is improving walking and cycling connections as well

A new access ramp linking Washbrook Road with the Greenway officially opened in November 2025.

North Northamptonshire Council states that the project was supported through Section 106 contributions from Rushden Lakes together with the Council's capital programme.

It may sound unrelated to a telehandler course. In reality it illustrates something operators see constantly.

Construction activity exists within a much wider network of people, paths, roads and public spaces. Safe plant operation therefore begins with understanding who else may enter or pass beside the working area.

£5bn+ Universal investment in Bedfordshire

A huge construction programme has also started farther south in Bedfordshire

In June 2026 the UK Government confirmed more than £5 billion of investment during the expected five year construction period for Universal United Kingdom Resort in Bedfordshire.

Government figures anticipate nearly 20,000 construction jobs during development, with the resort planned to open in 2031.

This project is in Bedford Borough rather than Rushden and completing a telehandler course does not guarantee employment there.

It is nevertheless highly relevant regional context. North Northamptonshire Council's own housing assessment specifically refers to the proximity of the Universal development when discussing anticipated demand around Rushden.

More information about the strategic expansion is available from Rada Hrabstwa Północnego Northamptonshire. The current local planning work can also be checked through Rada Miasta Rushden.

One town and several operating environments

What would actually change for a telehandler operator around Rushden?

The controls do not know whether you are on an urban regeneration site, a housing development or a large regional infrastructure project. You do. That difference matters.

Working inside established Rushden

Buildings, parked vehicles, narrow access points and pedestrians can compress the available operating area. Observation and controlled manoeuvring become especially important.

Working on the expanding eastern edge

Greater space does not remove risk. Soft ground, changing haul routes, drainage excavations, temporary roads and unfinished surfaces can all affect machine stability.

Working around occupied housing

Later construction phases often bring residents much closer to ongoing work. Delivery planning and segregation become increasingly important as a development becomes occupied.

Working beside public routes

Greenways, footways and vehicle access routes remind us that members of the public do not understand a machine's blind areas in the same way an experienced plant operator should.

Do you know which telehandler you will actually operate?

Tell us whether the machine is fixed or rotating, what maximum lift height you expect to use, what work you will perform and whether your employer has requested CPCS or NPORS.

If suspended loads form part of the job, mention that before booking as well.

Think before extending the boom

Four things can turn a straightforward pallet lift into a completely different task

New operators often concentrate on the load weight. Experienced operators quickly learn that weight is only part of the calculation.

Zasięg wysięgnika

Extending the boom moves the load farther away from the machine. The operator needs to check rated capacity information for the planned working position rather than rely on the machine's headline maximum capacity.

Ground condition

A machine can have sufficient rated lifting capacity and still be standing on unsuitable ground. CPCS training requires operators to consider whether the ground can support the machine's total weight for the planned height and reach.

Load centre

If the forks do not engage the load correctly, its effective centre can move farther forward. Poor fork positioning can therefore affect both load stability and available lifting capacity.

Machine configuration

Stabilisers, chassis levelling, attachment type and boom position can all change the way the machine works. The operator needs to understand the particular telehandler rather than rely on habits learned from another model.

A telehandler operator should never reduce the decision to one question about tonnes. The real question concerns the load, reach, height, ground and machine configuration together.

Choose according to the machine

CPCS A17 does not mean exactly the same telehandler in every case

Current CPCS Category Information issued by NOCN in March 2026 divides A17 into several endorsements.

This matters because simply asking for an A17 ticket can still leave an important part of the question unanswered.

CPCS A17A

Przemysłowe teleskopowe

A17A is the CPCS endorsement for the industrial telescopic machine type.

CPCS A17B

Do 9 metrów

A17B covers telescopic handlers within the CPCS category up to 9 metres.

CPCS A17C

Wszystkie rozmiary z wyjątkiem obrotu o 360 stopni

A17C is the broad fixed telehandler endorsement and is particularly relevant to conventional construction telehandlers of different lifting heights.

CPCS A17E

Obciążenie zawieszone na terenie równym

Suspended load work is represented separately within A17. CPCS classifies endorsement E as separate rather than simply treating it as part of conventional fork duties.

CPCS A77

Wózek teleskopowy z obrotem o 360°

A 360 degree rotating telehandler has its own CPCS category. The March 2026 CPCS category document records the former A17D as superseded by A77.

Do not rely on an old course article that still presents A17D as the current rotating telehandler qualification. The current CPCS category table identifies A77 for 360 slew.

Current category information can be checked directly through NOCN CPCS.

Szkolenie CPCS

CPCS A17 telehandler training for Rushden candidates

CPCS A17

Uchwyt teleskopowy

Training in machine control, inspection, stability, load handling and operating judgement.

The CPCS A17 route is appropriate for operators who need a Construction Plant Competence Scheme qualification for the relevant telescopic handler endorsement.

For conventional fixed construction telehandlers, A17C Wszystkie rozmiary z wyjątkiem obrotu o 360 stopni is one of the most important endorsements to understand.

The current NOCN A17C training standard is considered to contain 70 procent lub więcej szkolenia praktycznego.

That practical proportion makes sense. Load charts and stability principles need explanation, but an operator also needs time to turn that knowledge into controlled actions inside the cab.

Kategoria A17C all sizes excluding 360 degree slew
CPTS novice listing 4 days on the current prices page
CPTS experienced listing 2 days on the current prices page

What should the training develop?

  • You should understand the main components, controls and safety devices fitted to the machine.
  • You should carry out a structured pre operational inspection before use.
  • You should understand different steering modes and how they affect manoeuvring.
  • You should establish the weight of a load rather than simply guess it.
  • You should use the rated capacity information for the intended height and reach.
  • You should assess the ground before relying on it to support the working machine.
  • You should set the forks so the load is properly supported.
  • You should understand when stabilisers or chassis levelling systems need to be used.
  • You should maintain observation while travelling, turning and placing loads.
  • You should know how to shut down and secure the machine correctly after work.
There is a published difference in CPTS duration information. The current CPTS prices page lists A17C novice training as four days while the dedicated A17 course page states that a completely new operator may require up to five days. Confirm the programme attached to your booking.

A real lift starts before the forks move

Eight decisions an operator should make during a normal telehandler task

Imagine you are unloading materials on a housing site on the edge of Rushden. What should happen before you raise the boom?

Look at the working area

Check the route, pedestrians, other plant, excavations, overhead hazards, gradient, surface and final placement point.

Inspect the telehandler

Carry out the required checks before operation. A defect discovered before the first lift is far easier to manage than one noticed with a load already raised.

Identify the load

Establish its weight, shape, dimensions and condition. Check whether the packaging or pallet can safely support the planned movement.

Read the capacity information

Check whether the load is within the machine's permitted capacity for the exact height and horizontal reach required.

Set and engage the forks correctly

Position the forks to support the load properly and enter squarely. Avoid carrying material on the fork tips.

Configure the load for travel

Retract and lower the boom into an appropriate travelling position while keeping the load controlled and observation clear.

Stop and reassess at the destination

Conditions may be different from the collection point. Check the surface, required reach, obstacles and people again before lifting.

Place the load without rushing

Align accurately, use smooth hydraulic movements and confirm that the load is properly supported before withdrawing the forks.

A small mistake with a large effect

Why should you care where the pallet sits on the forks?

Because getting underneath a pallet is not the same as supporting it correctly.

Current CPCS training material discusses poor engagement sometimes described as undercutting. If a load sits too far towards the fork tips, its effective position moves farther away from the machine.

This can affect stability and reduce the capacity available to the operator.

Now add boom extension.

The load is already farther forward on the forks and the boom is then extended away from the chassis. Neither action should be treated casually.

Good operators do not ask whether they have caught enough of the pallet to move it. They make sure the forks support it properly before they move at all.

Trasa NPORS

NPORS N010 telehandler course for operators from Rushden

NPORS N010

Uchwyt teleskopowy

Operator training covering inspection, capacity, manoeuvring and controlled load placement.

NPORS N010 provides another formal training route for telescopic handler operators.

CPTS offers the course to beginners and experienced workers and can provide training at its Wellingborough facility or discuss suitable workplace delivery.

The programme includes legal responsibilities under PUWER and LOLER, machine checks, load charts, safe working loads, major components, manoeuvring, lifting, attachments and communication with other people involved in the lifting operation.

The official NPORS training and testing ratio document currently publishes a five day novice duration for N010.

It also gives a maximum novice practical training ratio of three learners to one instructor and one machine.

CPTS currently lists its rough terrain telescopic handler novice programme as four days on the company's prices page. Because this does not exactly match the general five day novice duration published by NPORS, ask which programme and candidate route apply to your booking.

View NPORS N010 Telescopic Handler training

The task changes when the load hangs

Using a telehandler with suspended loads requires another level of thought

Put a pallet firmly on the forks and the load moves with the fork carriage. Suspend a load below a lifting point and it can move independently.

It can swing. Wind can influence it. Acceleration and braking can create movement. Communication with the people controlling or signalling the lift becomes more important.

This is why suspended load duties should not be treated as an automatic extension of ordinary fork work.

CPCS currently lists A17E Suspended load on non rough terrain as a separate endorsement.

CPTS oferuje również NPORS N138 Ładowarki teleskopowe – ładunki zawieszone.

N138 covers areas such as LOLER and PUWER responsibilities, load charts, centre of gravity, ground conditions, environmental effects, lifting accessories and working with slingers and signallers.

If the job description says you will use a hook, jib or other lifting attachment, tell the training provider before you book. Do not discover the difference after arriving on site.

HSE telehandler safety

Where do the most serious telehandler accidents happen?

Usually not because somebody forgot the name of a control.

The Health and Safety Executive states that most fatal and serious injuries involving telehandlers occur in two situations.

The machine is moving and strikes a pedestrian, particularly during reversing.

Alternatively the machine is lifting and overturns, trapping the operator or somebody nearby.

Those two scenarios explain a huge amount of what good telehandler training needs to achieve.

Widoczność z tyłu

HSE identifies poor visibility behind the machine as a significant hazard. Suitable aids and sometimes a signaller may be required.

Front right blind area

Certain raised boom configurations can create a substantial blind area towards the front right hand side.

Oddzielenie ruchu pieszego

Sites should separate people and telehandlers and provide safe traffic routes rather than expecting both to share uncontrolled space.

Ziemia

HSE warns about sloping, uneven and unstable surfaces. Even rough terrain machines have operating limits.

Ładunki na podwyższeniu

Moving with a raised load is dangerous and HSE says it should be avoided.

Prędkość

Excessive cornering speed can contribute to overturning. Site traffic management should therefore establish suitable limits.

Załączniki

Changing the attachment can alter how the machine behaves and may affect available lifting capacity.

Kompetencje

HSE says operators should be trained, competent and authorised for the specific telehandler they use.

Current regulator guidance is available from the Urząd ds. Zdrowia i Bezpieczeństwa Pracy.

A question asked every week

Do you legally need a telehandler licence in Rushden?

People use the expression telehandler licence constantly. Employers talk about tickets. Operators talk about cards. Search engines show all of these phrases.

Legally, the situation is slightly different.

HSE confirms that there are no government issued licences for workplace transport.

Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 requires employers to ensure that operators receive adequate training and are competent for the machinery they use.

HSE also says there is no such thing as a lift truck licence in the legal sense.

Training certificates and operator cards nevertheless provide useful evidence that appropriate training and assessment have taken place. That is why the words licence and ticket remain so common in the industry.

What should you ask your employer?

Ask which scheme and category they require for the particular machine and site.

HSE confirms that employers can select a training scheme they consider appropriate provided it results in operators being competent for the equipment they are expected to use.

Do you need a car driving licence?

Not simply to operate mobile plant inside a workplace.

HSE states that a road driving licence is not legally required for workplace plant operation unless the vehicle is driven on the public highway. Public road use is a separate matter and road traffic legislation then applies.

You can verify these points through HSE workplace transport guidance.

The course is not the entire learning process

HSE describes three stages of lift truck operator training

This part is particularly useful because it explains why passing a formal course does not suddenly make every telehandler and every site identical.

Szkolenie podstawowe

The operator develops the basic knowledge and practical skill required to operate the type of truck safely and efficiently.

Specjalistyczne szkolenie zawodowe

Training then considers the actual machine, controls, attachments, workplace conditions and way the equipment will be used in the person's job.

Szkolenie wprowadzające

The operator applies what has been learned under normal workplace conditions and suitable supervision.

Imagine learning on one machine and then arriving at a Rushden housing site with another model, different controls, a different attachment and completely different traffic routes.

Your original training matters enormously, but so does learning the machine and workplace you now have in front of you.

Need telehandler training for several members of staff?

Tell CPTS how many people require training, their real level of experience, which machines you use and whether you need CPCS or NPORS.

Selected NPORS training can also be discussed for delivery at a suitable workplace with the correct equipment and safe training area.

Novice or experienced operator

How long should you allow for telehandler training?

There is no single duration that fits every machine, scheme and operator.

HSE itself explains that training duration depends on matters including prior experience, learner progress and the training ratio. Its general lift truck guidance says novice basic training typically lasts around three to five days.

Always confirm the duration attached to your individual booking. Published CPTS and general scheme information does not currently give exactly the same duration in every place.

More importantly, do not describe yourself as experienced merely to obtain the shorter programme.

Operating a dumper for several years does not automatically make you an experienced telescopic handler operator.

Starting from zero is perfectly possible

What if you have never driven a telehandler before?

Complete beginner

Start slowly. Learn the machine layout, inspection routine, steering, braking and basic positioning before worrying about complicated load placement.

Then add load charts, boom extension, changing ground conditions and more demanding manoeuvres.

A beginner who asks why something is done is easier to train than somebody who hides what they do not understand.

Doświadczony operator

Be precise about your experience. Say which telehandlers you have used, what reach, what attachments, what sort of loads and how recently you operated.

Experience should mean practical competence on the relevant type of machine rather than simply years spent working somewhere near one.

CPCS card progression

What happens after passing the CPCS technical tests?

The current CPCS Scheme Booklet issued in March 2026 sets out the operator card pathway.

Karta operatora przeszkolonego w systemie CPCS

The current CPCS booklet states that the Trained Operator Card is valid for dwa lata.

To progress, the operator needs to meet the current CPCS requirements including achieving the relevant vocational qualification.

Karta kompetentnego operatora CPCS

The current CPCS booklet states that the Competent Operator Card is valid for pięć lat.

Renewal later requires the applicable current CPCS requirements and evidence of continuing operating ability.

Be cautious with old web pages that describe a fixed 300 logged hours as the current universal Red Card upgrade requirement. The current CPCS upgrade information centres on the relevant vocational qualification, an in date Health, Safety and Environment test and the current card requirements.
CITB support for employers

Can an employer around Rushden receive a grant towards telehandler training?

Eligible employers may be able to receive CITB grant support.

CITB currently places several telescopic handler standards in Plant Tier 2.

These include all sizes excluding 360 slew, all sizes including 360 slew, industrial telescopic, suspended loads and machines up to 9 metres.

Current Tier 2 rates are 630 funtów za szkolenie dla początkujących spełniających wymagania oraz 300 funtów za szkolenie dla zaawansowanych spełniających wymagania.

This does not make every telehandler course free.

Training and testing must meet the current grant conditions, lead to an appropriate card carrying the CSCS logo and be delivered through the required approved arrangements.

Employers also need to provide their CITB registration number so an eligible provider can submit the achievement correctly.

Aktualne informacje można uzyskać pod adresem Normy CITB dotyczące maszyn budowlanych i dotacje.

Dlaczego widelce muszą być prawidłowo ustawione?

Widły muszą prawidłowo i równomiernie przenosić ładunek.

Prace z ładunkiem zawieszonym wymagają dodatkowej wiedzy i kwalifikacji.

CPTS can discuss workplace delivery for suitable NPORS training. The proposed location needs the correct machine and an appropriate safe area and facilities for the training and assessment being arranged.

Czy powinienem wybrać CPCS czy NPORS?

Ask the employer, contractor or site which scheme and machine category they require. HSE states that employers can choose a training scheme they consider appropriate provided operators become competent for the machinery they are required to use.

How do I book telehandler training if I live in Rushden?

You can contact CPTS through the website, call 01234 604 151 or email office@cpts.uk. Tell the team which telehandler you expect to operate, whether suspended loads are involved, which certification your employer requires and how much relevant operating experience you already have.

Ready to arrange your telehandler training?

If you already know the scheme and category you need, ask CPTS for current availability.

If you are still unsure, describe the actual machine and work first.

Fixed telehandler, rotating machine, ordinary fork duties or suspended loads. Getting that distinction right before booking can save a great deal of frustration later.
