Loading, Positioning and Securing Plant
Before movement starts, everyone involved should understand the route, their responsibilities, the communication method and the stop signal.
The plant should approach the transporter at a controlled speed and remain correctly aligned with the ramps. Sudden steering, acceleration and braking should be avoided.
The operation must stop if:
- communication is lost;
- the machine becomes misaligned;
- a pedestrian enters the controlled area;
- the ramps or transporter move unexpectedly;
- visibility becomes inadequate;
- another unsafe condition develops.
Once the plant is on the transporter, it must be positioned within the transporter’s limits. The machine’s weight, centre of gravity, axle loading, dimensions and attachments all need to be considered.
Physical space on the trailer does not, by itself, confirm that the load is suitable or correctly positioned.
Plant Load Security
The plant must be prevented from moving during braking, acceleration, cornering and normal road vibration.
Depending on the machine and transporter, the securing arrangement may involve:
- rated chains;
- suitable tensioning devices;
- lashing straps where appropriate;
- wheel chocks;
- timbers or physical barriers;
- transporter steps or bulkheads;
- approved machine and trailer securing points;
- separate restraint for attachments and loose equipment.

The securing method should consider:
- whether the plant is wheeled or tracked;

- the position of booms, buckets and attachments;
- the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Loose buckets, tools and additional attachments must be restrained separately where required. Chains or straps should not be connected to parts of the machine or transporter that are unsuitable for load restraint.
Before travel, the complete arrangement must be checked. Restraints may also need to be checked during the journey where the load can settle or lose tension.

- NPORS Traditional registration;
- NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator Card;

Traditional NPORS registration may be issued for three or five years, as agreed by the operator, employer and training provider.
The NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator Card is normally valid for two years. During this period, the holder must complete the relevant vocational qualification to progress through the applicable construction route.
The NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator Card is normally valid for five years and requires the relevant qualification and scheme conditions to be met.

N120, N132 or N133 – Which Course Do You Need?
These categories cover different responsibilities.
N120 Plant Loader & Securer
N120 is for people who prepare transporters, load or direct machinery onto them and secure plant for transportation.
N132 Plant Mover
N132 covers driving and repositioning plant during non-operational duties. It does not include the full transporter preparation and load-security scope of N120.
N133 Plant Machinery Marshal
N133 is for someone who remains outside the machine and directs plant movements using agreed hand signals or radio communication.
