The Joint Industry Board – or JIB – is a UK organisation that helps set standards in the electrical industry. It works to make sure electricians and contractors are trained properly, paid fairly, and working under safe, professional conditions.
One of the best-known things JIB handles is the Card ECS – a kind of ID that proves someone is qualified to do electrical work on a UK construction site. Without it, many sites won’t let you start. The ECS card shows your training level, health and safety knowledge, and sometimes your specialist skills too.
JIB isn’t just about certificates though. It also helps set wage rates, working conditions, and dispute processes – so both employers and workers know where they stand. They work with contractors, unions, and clients to keep things clear and fair across the industry.
If you’re working on-site – especially near or alongside electrical work – knowing what JIB is and what the Card ECS means is a good idea. It tells you someone’s got the right qualifications and isn’t just showing up with a toolbox and no paperwork.
