What is the SMSTS Refresher Course?
The SMSTS refresher course is mandatory training for anyone wanting to retain their SMSTS certificate after it expires. The course must be taken before the certificate runs out – those waiting until after will instead need to retake the entire 5-day SMSTS course to regain their certification.
During the SMSTS refresher course, you’ll learn about a huge range of topics, ensuring you relearn any important information you might have forgotten and understand any new regulations or best practices implemented since your last training session.
Some of the topics you’ll cover in your SMSTS renewal course include:
- Updated Legislation: Understand any new legislation introduced that impacts construction safety.
- Risk Management: Revise how to identify, assess, and manage risk effectively on a construction site.
- Health and Safety: Review HSE guidelines, plus learn about any new guidelines introduced by the HSE.

SMSTS Refresher Training Course – FAQs
Do I have to take the SMSTS refresher?
If you have an SMSTS qualification and want to keep it after it expires, then yes, you do have to take the SMSTS refresher. If you don’t and your certificate expires, you’ll have to redo the entire course to get the qualification back.
Who is the SMSTS refresher course for?
It’s for anyone with a current SMSTS certificate who either wants to have their certificate renewed or simply wants to refresh their memory on construction safety.
Can I take the SMSTS refresher online?
Yes, you can. We offer a 2-day online refresher course, which covers the same syllabus and also ensures your certificate will be renewed, provided you pass the test at the end of the course.
Is there an exam?
Yes, there is a short multiple-choice exam at the end of the course. If you pass, you’ll receive your renewed certificate. If you don’t manage to pass, we’ll work with you to ensure you pass when you resit the exam.
Will I receive a new certificate?
Yes, after passing the course, you’ll receive a new SMSTS certificate, valid for another 5 years.
