What’s Taught on the SMSTS Day Release Course?
The SMSTS day release course covers the same syllabus as the full-time SMSTS course. This is the case regardless of whether you take the SMSTS day release course in person or online.
Some of the main topics you’ll learn about during the SMSTS day release course include:
- Health and Safety Legislation: Understand how health and safety legislation applies to your role and how to ensure the site you’re managing complies with regulations. Also, learn about CDM regulations.
- Workplace Culture: Find out how to encourage and build a safety-first culture amongst team members, to create a safer workplace environment.
- Risk Management: See how to identify hazards and carry out risk assessments, and how to put in measures to eliminate or mitigate against risks.
- High-Risk Activities: Find out how to safely manage high-risk activities, including working at height and demolition.
- Effective Communication: Improve your communication skills to deliver effective toolbox talks and conduct thorough site inductions.
At the end of the course, you’ll be required to take a short multiple-choice test. Pass this, and you’ll receive your CITB SMSTS qualification, valid for 5 years.

Is the SMSTS day release course the same as the full-time course?
Yes, the SMSTS day release course is the same as the full-time course. You’ll be taught the same syllabus and will receive the same certificate. The CITB accredits both courses.
Can I take the course online?
Yes, you can. We offer an in-person online day release course, plus you can also take the SMSTS course online over the course of one week.
How long does the SMSTS day release course last?
The SMSTS course is 37.5 hours. This will be spread over 5 full days. On the SMSTS day release course, you’ll attend training once per week for 5 weeks.
Will I receive a qualification?
Yes, should you pass the test at the end of the course, you’ll receive a CITB-accredited Site Safety Plus certificate.
How long does the SMSTS qualification last?
Your qualification will last for 5 years. You will need to take an SMSTS refresher before your certificate expires to retain your qualification. If you don’t and later decide you want to regain the qualification, you’ll need to retake the entire course.
