SSSTS-SMSTS Courses Milton Keynes

CITB SSSTS and SMSTS Courses in Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes is a fairly large city located in central England. It is bustling with cultural and economic life on a daily basis and is developing rapidly. The construction sector in the area is also doing very well. There are many different investments and construction sites in the area. This means that construction workers are looking for opportunities to expand their skills and competences. SSSTS and SMSTS courses are a natural career path for ambitious individuals who plan to work in supervisory and managerial positions. That is why we have been organising SMSTS training and SSSTS courses near Milton Keynes for many years.

Why choose our SSSTS and SMSTS courses?

We have been organising our SSSTS and SMSTS courses for many years. Milton Keynes is very close to our training centre, so we warmly welcome all interested parties to our training courses! However, a good location is not the only reason to choose our company. CPTS LTD has a highly qualified team of trainers who always ensure the highest quality of content. Our trainers are able to effectively impart knowledge and practical skills while maintaining a very good atmosphere during the training courses.

What are SMSTS and SSSTS courses and why are they so often required in Milton Keynes?

Milton Keynes is growing rapidly. New housing estates, warehouses, road reconstructions, logistics centres, modernisation of public facilities. In such an environment, there is no room for chaos.

SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is for those who manage construction ‘from above’ and are responsible for planning, organisation, supervision, control and coordination.
SSSTS (Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme) is for those who are closer to the team: they lead people, keep order on the work front, conduct briefings and respond to hazards before they become a problem.

And now the important part:
In the UK, this is not a ‘nice extra’. Very often, without SMSTS or SSSTS, you simply will not be able to join a project in a supervisory role.

SMSTS or SSSTS – which course is right for you?

Ask yourself one simple question:

Do you have a real impact on how the entire construction site operates?

If so, go for SMSTS.

Do you lead a team and supervise the work on site?

If so, go for SSSTS.

And if you still have doubts, don’t worry. Give us a call, tell us what your position and responsibilities are, and we will select a course for you without pushing you towards a ‘bigger, more expensive’ one.

SMSTS Courses Milton Keynes – who is this training for?

SMSTS is most often chosen by:

  • site managers
  • project managers
  • construction managers
  • senior supervisors
  • people who are promoted to managerial positions
  • site managers who have to deal with RAMS, planning and work control

If you feel that construction is starting to overwhelm you with paperwork, SMSTS will help you organise the whole system in your head.

What does SMSTS offer in practice?

Not just knowledge. It gives you confidence because:

  1. you know what is and isn’t allowed under the law
  2. you can require the right documents from subcontractors
  3. you can prove that you have done your due diligence
  4. you react faster before an accident or near miss occurs

Seriously, this is the difference between ‘putting out fires’ and running a construction site like a professional.

SSSTS Courses Milton Keynes – who is this training for?

SSSTS is designed for:

  • supervisors
  • foremen
  • team leaders
  • gangers
  • people who lead teams and have to keep an eye on health and safety on an ongoing basis

SSSTS is shorter, but it is not ‘easy’. It is specific.

Among other things, you will learn:

  1. how to give toolbox talks that people actually listen to
  2. how to handle induction training on site without waffling
  3. how to control RAMS and team work in real conditions
  4. how to stop work when it becomes dangerous and how to justify it

If you have a team and feel that sometimes everything depends on your reaction, SSSTS is for you.

What do SMSTS and SSSTS training courses look like in practice?

Many people think that it will be five days of boring theory or two days of ‘slides and captions’. And then they come to the training and say:
‘Okay… that makes sense. Finally, someone explains it normally.’

Because we do it in a human way:

  • we talk like we’re on a construction site, not in an office
  • we give examples from real life, not from a textbook
  • we explain how to defend yourself with documentation when something goes wrong
  • we show you what they really check during audits and inspections

You leave this course feeling like you understand the subject, not just that you’ve ‘passed the training’.

What exactly does SMSTS training cover?

SMSTS covers safety management and work organisation in broad terms. We discuss, among other things:

The rights and responsibilities of management

  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • manager’s responsibility and ‘duty of care’
  • due diligence and consequences of negligence

CDM Regulations 2015

  • roles: client, principal contractor, contractor
  • what compliance looks like in practice, not in theory

RAMS, or documents that save your skin

  1. risk assessments
  2. method statements
  3. safe systems of work
  4. how to check RAMS from subcontractors so that they are not ‘copy and paste’

High-risk work

  • work at height
  • scaffolding and access (work at height)
  • excavations and earthworks
  • demolitions and danger zones
  • work in confined spaces (confined spaces)

RIDDOR and incident reporting

  • what to report
  • how to document near misses
  • how to avoid problems caused by poorly maintained paperwork

What does SSSTS training cover?

SSSTS is more ‘field-oriented’. We focus on what you do on a daily basis:

  1. supervising people and organising work
  2. identifying hazards and responding quickly
  3. toolbox talks and communication with the team
  4. checking PPE and order at workstations
  5. enforcing rules without conflict or shouting
  6. cooperating with management and passing on information

SSSTS teaches you how to be a boss that people listen to, not just ‘have to’ listen to.

How long does the course last and what does the certificate look like?

SMSTS

  • standard 5 days
  • CITB Site Safety Plus certificate is valid for 5 years
  • before the expiry date, you do SMSTS Refresher (2 days)

SSSTS

  • 2 days as standard
  • The CITB Site Safety Plus certificate is valid for 5 years
  • You renew it with the SSSTS Refresher (1 day)

And an important thing: it’s not worth waiting until the last minute, because after the deadline you often have to do the whole course again. We also welcome learners from nearby areas such as Bletchley, Newport Pagnell, Woburn Sands, Stony Stratford, Wolverton, Olney, Deanshanger and surrounding villages.
