SSSTS-SMSTS Courses Northampton

SMSTS and SSSTS training courses in Northampton

A construction site is not a playground… There is no room for mistakes or problems here. However, managing construction and works and ensuring safety is quite a challenge. That is why SMSTS and SSSTS courses have become so important in recent years. Northampton is developing rapidly, both culturally and economically. This can be seen at every turn. There are many new investments, reconstructions, modernisations and renovations. All this means that local construction workers are looking for ways to improve their qualifications and competences in this field. The CITB Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme and Site Management Safety Training Scheme courses in Northampton provide an excellent opportunity for this.

Why choose our SMSTS and SSSTS courses?

First and foremost, because our SSSTS and SMSTS courses in Northampton are held at our training centre in the city or in nearby Wellingborough, which is very easy and convenient to reach. What else makes CPTS LTD training courses stand out? Certainly our highly experienced training staff. Our trainers are able to teach not only theoretical and book knowledge, but also practical skills, on which they place considerable emphasis. All courses and training sessions are always conducted in a pleasant, even friendly atmosphere. In addition, we always take an individual approach to our students, which means that they can get the most out of the course.

Why are SMSTS and SSSTS in Northampton a good move?

Northampton and the surrounding area is a region where construction is constantly alive: new investments, modernisations, logistics, warehouses, infrastructure. And that means one thing: there is growing pressure for safe work practices, proper planning and risk control.

And now the most important thing:

SMSTS and SSSTS do not turn you into a ‘paper clerk’. They teach you to make decisions faster, smarter and safer.

As a result:

  • you are better able to defend yourself in the event of an inspection or incident,
  • you notice hazards faster before they turn into a problem,
  • you know how to conduct briefings and toolbox talks so that people really listen,
  • you can enforce rules without making enemies.

SMSTS or SSSTS – which one to choose and how do they differ?

We hear this question all the time, so let’s answer it normally, without beating around the bush.

SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)

SMSTS is for you if:

  1. you manage a construction site or a large part of a project,
  2. you plan work, coordinate subcontractors,
  3. you are responsible for documentation, RAMS, site organisation,
  4. you make decisions that affect the entire site.

This is a course typically for management and senior supervision.

SSSTS (Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme)

SSSTS is suitable if:

  • you are a site supervisor, foreman or team leader,
  • you supervise people and work in the field,
  • you conduct shorter briefings, monitor PPE, order and rules,
  • you respond to current hazards in the workplace.

This is a course for people who are close to people and work, but still have responsibility for safety.

The simplest tip

If you have any doubts, you can adopt the following rule:

  • SMSTS = management of the entire construction site
  • SSSTS = supervision of the team and work on site

And if you are still unsure, just give us a call. Tell us what you do on the construction site and we will select the right option for you. Without forcing you to take a more expensive course.

SMSTS courses Northampton – for site managers and supervisors

What does SMSTS give you in practice?

SMSTS training is for people who are responsible for:

  1. planning and organising work,
  2. safety control,
  3. coordinating particularly risky work,
  4. ensuring compliance with UK regulations.

On this course, you will learn not only the regulations, but also how to ‘think like a site manager’.

What does SMSTS training look like (time and format)?

You have several options, so you can tailor the course to your work and private life:

SMSTS full course

  • 5 days (approximately 37.5 hours)
  • you can do it in the form of an intensive block

SMSTS Day Release

  • 1 day a week for 5 weeks
  • a great option if you can’t disappear for a whole week

SMSTS online (live)

  • you still have a trainer, a group and interaction
  • you learn from home, but ‘for real’, not like a course from recordings

SMSTS Refresher (renewal)

  • 2 days
  • you do it when your certificate is about to expire

Remember: the SMSTS certificate is valid for 5 years and you must renew it before it expires. There is no ‘grace period’.

What does the SMSTS programme cover?

In SMSTS, you will cover topics that really determine whether a construction site runs smoothly or descends into chaos.

The programme includes, among other things:

  1. health and safety law in the UK, responsibilities and due diligence
  2. CDM Regulations 2015 and how to apply them in work management
  3. RAMS (Risk Assessments & Method Statements) and safe work systems
  4. planning and control of high-risk work, e.g.
    • work at height
    • excavation and earthworks
    • demolition
    • scaffolding
    • confined spaces
  5. incident reporting and RIDDOR (i.e. what to do when something goes wrong)
  6. building a culture of safety, leadership and behavioural safety

This is knowledge that makes a difference, because in reality most problems on a construction site start with poor communication and a lack of planning.

SSSTS courses Northampton – a course for foremen and supervisors

SSSTS training is shorter, but it is by no means ‘easier’ in the sense of being ‘less important’. It is a course that often makes the biggest difference because it teaches you how to work on the front line.

Who is SSSTS for?

If you:

  • lead people in the field,
  • assign tasks,
  • enforce rules,
  • conduct inductions, briefings and control hazards,

then SSSTS is ideal for you.

How long does SSSTS last?

  • Normally 2 days.
  • A live online version is also available.
  • When it expires, you do the SSSTS Refresher (1 day).

The SSSTS certificate is valid for 5 years.

What exactly do you cover in SSSTS?

At SSSTS, we focus on things that happen every day on a construction site:

  1. the basics of health and safety law in the UK as a supervisor
  2. the responsibilities of supervisors and practical duties on site
  3. RAMS in a version ‘for people in the field’, i.e. how to read and implement it
  4. conducting toolbox talks and site inductions
  5. communication, behavioural safety and enforcement of rules
  6. response to incidents, accidents and emergencies

After SSSTS, many people say outright: ‘I finally know how to talk to the team to keep things safe, but without unnecessary spin.’
