What’s this SSSTS thing all about?
It’s short for Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme. Basically, it’s a CITB-backed course that helps supervisors understand what they’re legally expected to do when it comes to health and safety on a UK building site.
Do I actually need it to work as a supervisor?
In loads of cases, yeah. If you’re managing workers or looking after safety, especially on sites run by Build UK contractors, this course is often required. It’s more than just a tick-box – it shows you’re serious about doing things right.
How long does the certificate stick around?
Once you pass, it’s good for five years. After that, you’ll need to do the SSSTS Refresher – and best not to let it expire, or you’re back to square one with the full course again.
Is the test tricky? Can I fail it?
It’s a multiple-choice test at the end. Most people pass first time, especially if they join in during the sessions. That said, if it doesn’t go your way, you’ll be able to retake it. No big drama.
Does this course get me a CSCS card?
Not on its own. You’ll still need an NVQ Level 3 (or higher) in site supervision to qualify for a CSCS Supervisory Card. But this course is a big part of the package.
Is there an online version of the course?
Definitely. We run live online sessions via Zoom with real instructors. You’ll get the same certificate as you would in a classroom – just without the travel or the early train.
Do I need experience first?
Some hands-on site experience helps, especially if you’re stepping into a team leader role. You don’t need any fancy qualifications, but you’ll need decent English to keep up and pass the test.
Can I book for more than one person?
Yep – we’ve got options for company bookings, whether you’re training a few team leaders or the whole crew. Just drop us a line and we’ll work something out.
What do I need to bring?
If you’re in a classroom – just ID and something to write with. Online? Make sure your mic and camera work, and maybe have a cuppa nearby.
