Concrete pump

Concrete Pump

A concrete pump moves wet concrete from the mixer to where you need it on site. Sounds simple – but on busy jobs, it can save hours of hard work. Instead of dragging wheelbarrows around, the pump sends concrete through pipes and hoses, right where it needs to go. Up scaffolding, across big slabs, down into deep footings – no problem.

There are different kinds of pumps. Some are mobile and go from job to job, some are set up in one place and stay there. On small sites, you might see a sliding pump – basic but it does the trick. Bigger builds need something stronger – a mechanised or boom pump that can reach further and pour more. Stationary ones are often used on big sites for days or weeks at a time.

Most pumps sit on a lorry chassis, so they’re easy to move. Once set up, it’s all about keeping the mix flowing, watching pressure, and making sure the line’s clear. One blockage and you’ve got a mess – or worse.

Working with a concrete pump means you’ve got to know your kit. Bad setup or lack of communication can be dangerous. Hoses whipping, splashes, line bursts – it’s all avoidable with proper checks.

That’s why we cover this in our CPCS training at Construction and Plant Training Services. We don’t just show you the controls – we go through real-life issues from UK sites. How to work safely, keep the pour smooth, and finish the job right.
