As-built Documentation

As-built documentation is what’s left on paper once the job’s done – a full record of how a building was actually built, not just how it was planned. It shows what was installed, where, when, and sometimes by who. It’s the final version of everything, reflecting any changes made along the way.

This type of documentation includes updated drawings (as-built plans), technical specs, certificates, test results, materials used, and manuals for systems like heating, electrical or ventilation. You’ll also find info about equipment setup, maintenance instructions, and sometimes proof of training or qualifications of the people involved in the job.

In the UK, as-built documents are often handed over to building control or the client during project completion or practical handover. They’re essential for ongoing maintenance, refurbishments, insurance, and legal compliance – especially on large or public-sector projects. Without proper as-built records, future work on the site can get messy fast.

Contractors, site managers, and plant operators all play a part in gathering this info. Keeping accurate notes, marking up plans, and making sure all sign-offs are done correctly can save a lot of time and headaches later on.

At Construction and Plant Training Services, we cover documentation awareness and site compliance in several of our CPCS and NPORS training courses. We don’t just teach you how to operate machines – we help you understand the paperwork that keeps the job site legal, safe, and well organised.
