ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme)

The ECS card – short for Electrotechnical Certification Scheme – is like a licence for electricians and electrical workers in the UK. It proves that someone is qualified, has up-to-date health and safety knowledge, and is ready to work on site.

Holding an ECS card shows that you’ve passed the right tests, got the necessary qualifications, and understand how to stay safe around electrical systems. For many employers, it’s the minimum needed to step onto site – especially in commercial or industrial settings.

The card isn’t just for electricians. People working in fire alarms, data systems, access control or even apprentices can apply for different versions of the ECS card. The scheme is linked with the JIB (Joint Industry Board), which helps set the standards for pay, training and safety in the electrical sector.

Most ECS cards include your job role, qualifications, and whether you’ve passed a health and safety assessment. Some show specialist skills or security clearance too. So when a site manager checks your card, they know you’re not just showing up with tools – you’ve actually got the backing to do the work properly.

At Construction and Plant Training Services, we don’t issue ECS cards – but we help you prepare for the kind of safe, professional work that ECS represents. Our CPCS and NPORS training courses include health and safety awareness, team coordination and working alongside other trades, including electrical crews.
