Enquire nowWorking on a construction site brings a lot of responsibilities, and environmental awareness is one of them. The Site Management Environmental Course helps site managers and supervisors understand the risks and obligations tied to the environment while on site. It’s straightforward, practical and built around what really matters out there – compliance, control, and doing things right.
If you’re already managing a site – or aiming to – and you’re expected to take care of environmental standards, this course is likely what you need. It’s for people working in UK construction who need to understand environmental management, both from a legal and practical angle.
You don’t have to be an expert going in. What matters is that you’re responsible for what happens on site and that includes everything from how waste is handled to how wildlife is protected.
The Site Management Environmental Course covers ten areas that commonly come up in real site work. These include:
You won’t just read about it – you’ll get to see how it applies in practice.
The course is normally done in a classroom setting. That said, some providers – including us – may offer it online for those who prefer or need more flexibility. Content is the same, but you learn in your own time.
If your team’s spread across sites, or you want to run this in-house, there are options for that too.
It takes around 7.5 hours to complete. The fee is £149, and that includes the final assessment and certification.
Assessment is a multiple-choice test at the end. You need a passing score to receive your certificate, which stays valid for five years.
Didn’t pass the first time? There’s a retake option available for a small fee.
This course is recognised by CITB. If your business is registered, you may be able to claim grant funding to help cover the cost. You’ll need to check that you’re eligible and apply through CITB in the usual way.
The certificate you receive shows that you’ve completed environmental training tailored for site managers. Many clients now expect site staff to have something like this – particularly on public projects or where sustainability standards are in place.
There’s growing pressure on the industry to manage environmental impact properly. Whether it’s clients, local authorities or regulators – they all expect construction sites to meet certain standards.
This course helps you do just that. It breaks things down clearly, focuses on what matters day to day, and leaves you with something concrete to show for it. Combine SMETS with the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) to cover both environmental responsibilities and full safety management duties on site.

It’s mostly about keeping sites in line with environmental rules. You’ll cover waste, water, energy use, noise, wildlife – the stuff that can get a site into trouble if no one’s watching it properly.
Yeah, it’s recognised. If you or your employer are signed up with CITB, there’s a good chance you can claim some money back once the course’s done.
Not necessarily. Some places still run classroom sessions, but others now let you do it online. Best to check with the training provider – they’ll tell you what’s available.
Roughly a full day – about 7 and a half hours if you do it all at once. If it’s online, you might spread it over a couple of sessions.
You’ll get a certificate showing you’ve completed the Site Management Environmental Course. It lasts five years. That’s enough to cover most project cycles or job roles.
Not really. It’s made for managers and supervisors, but plenty of people do it before moving into those jobs. It’s useful if you’re dealing with environmental stuff on site anyway.
It’s straightforward. Multiple-choice questions at the end. As long as you’ve followed along and paid attention, you’ll be fine. And if not – resits are allowed.
Around £149. That covers everything – training, exam, materials. Only extra you’d pay is if you had to retake the test.
