Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is the part of construction that deals with the design, building, and upkeep of structures we all rely on – like roads, bridges, railways, drainage systems, and foundations. It’s what keeps the built world running safely and smoothly.

Civil engineers don’t just sit at desks with drawings. They’re often on-site, checking progress, solving problems, and making sure everything meets the spec. Their work starts long before ground is broken – with surveys, planning and approvals – and continues long after the job’s done, through maintenance and inspections.

In the UK, civil engineering covers a huge range of projects: from digging deep for sewer tunnels, to raising bridges over rail lines, or laying concrete for major roads. It’s not just big city builds either – small towns and rural areas rely on this work too.

For plant operators and site workers, understanding civil engineering basics is useful – even if you’re not an engineer yourself. Knowing how a site is set out, what drainage needs to go in first, or why something has to be done in a certain order makes the work easier and safer.

At Construction and Plant Training Services, we don’t train civil engineers – but we train the people who work with them every day. Our CPCS and NPORS courses help plant operators understand their role in bigger infrastructure jobs. We cover real-world setups, sequencing, and how to stay compliant with UK regulations while working on major civil projects.
