Foundation

The foundation is where every building begins. It’s the part of the structure that transfers weight to the ground and keeps everything stable and upright – no matter the weather, soil or load above.

There are two main types of foundations: shallow and deep. Shallow ones – like strip foundations or concrete slabs – are common in houses and smaller builds. Deep foundations – like piles or caissons – are used for high-rise buildings or poor ground conditions where surface soil can’t take the load.

Choosing the right foundation depends on the ground beneath. That’s why most UK projects start with a soil investigation to check stability, drainage and bearing capacity. Once that’s done, engineers decide what type of base is needed to stop sinking, cracking or movement over time.

On-site, laying a foundation means digging to the right depth, forming, pouring concrete, setting reinforcement, and waiting for a proper cure. Accuracy matters – if the foundation’s off, the whole building could be too.

Operators working in groundwork, excavation or concrete placement all play a part. Whether you’re digging footings, grading the surface, or compacting hardcore, the foundation stage is all about setting the build up for success.

At Construction and Plant Training Services, we include foundation-related skills in many of our CPCS and NPORS training programmes. From site prep and trench safety to understanding levels and drawings. We give you the tools to do the job right – from the ground up.
