PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment – the stuff you wear to protect yourself on site. It’s not a high-vis and hard hat, it’s gloves, goggles, boots, masks, ear defenders, and in some cases a full-body suit, depending on the job.

Every task has its risks, and PPE is there to reduce the chance of injury. If you’re working around dust, chemicals, sharp materials, or moving machinery – there’s likely a bit of kit designed to keep you safer while you do it.

On a UK construction site, PPE is a legal requirement under HSE regulations. That means if there’s a risk, PPE has to be worn – no arguments. It might feel like a hassle sometimes, especially in hot weather or tight spaces, but skipping it can cost you more than comfort.

You’ll usually see different types of Personal Protective Equipment depending on the trade:

  • Hard hats to protect from falling objects
  • Safety boots with toe protection
  • Gloves for handling rough or sharp materials
  • Eye and face protection for cutting, grinding, or drilling
  • Masks and respirators for dusty or toxic environments

It’s also worth knowing that PPE is the last line of defence – it doesn’t replace safe systems of work, but adds extra protection just in case.

At Construction and Plant Training Services, we drill the basics of PPE into every CPCS and NPORS course. Because no matter what you’re doing – if you’re not protected, you’re at risk. And that’s not worth it.
