N106 Log Handler Course

NPORS N106 Log Handler Training Course

Moving timber is high-risk work. Done well, it’s smooth and safe. Done badly, it stops the yard. Our NPORS N106 Log Handler Course teaches you to control log handlers with confidence, protect people on the ground and keep production moving.

What this course covers

We focus on the real job: handling, stacking and loading timber in live environments such as sawmills, forestry sites and ports.

Key skills you’ll build:

  • Pre-use checks: tyres or tracks, pins, slew ring, hydraulics, grapples, guards and emergency stops.
  • Controls & setup: start-up, travel modes, stability aids, outriggers and slew control.
  • Rated capacity & stability: load charts, boom angles, slew radius and centre of gravity.
  • Attachments: log grapples, clamps and forks; clamping force and positioning for bundle sizes.
  • Stacking & loading: safe heights, bay layout, truck and trailer loading, trailer curtains and chocks.
  • Ground conditions: gradients, soft ground, wet timber and slippery surfaces.
  • Visibility & comms: banksman signals, radio use, mirrors and cameras, blind-spot control.
  • Traffic & pedestrians: exclusion zones, one-way routes and crossing points.
  • Environmental good practice: debris control, spill kits and noise/dust awareness.
  • End-of-shift: shutdown, parking, housekeeping and defect reporting.

You’ll learn how LOLER and PUWER apply in daily work – not just what the rules say, but how to apply them on the pad.

Who should take this course?

New starters and experienced operators in forestry, sawmills, ports or biomass sites. If you move or stack timber with a grapple or clamp, this is for you.

Do I need previous experience?

Not essential. We start with the basics and build up. If you’ve operated before, we tailor it as a focussed refresher.

Which machines are covered?

Log handlers and material handlers fitted with grapples, clamps or forks. Content is aligned to your kit and working environment.

What will I learn in practice?

Pre-use checks, controls, stability and rated capacity, bay layout, stacking heights, truck and trailer loading, visibility and communication with a banksman, plus tidy shutdown at the end of shift.

Which regulations apply?

Your day-to-day duties under LOLER and PUWER, with HSE good practice. We show how the rules fit real timber movements, not just the paperwork.

Where do you run training?

Across the UK, either on your site or at our Wellingborough training centre. We regularly serve Northampton, Kettering, Corby, Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Leicester, Coventry, Cambridge, Rugby, Banbury and Aylesbury.

Photo ID and suitable PPE if we’re on your site. A good level of English helps with briefings and signage.

Is there an assessment?

A practical skills check and a short knowledge element to confirm safe operation and understanding of site controls.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on location and group size. We offer the lowest rates and will match any cheaper like-for-like quote.

Do you help with CITB grants?

If your employer is CITB-registered, funding may apply. We’ll guide you through the claim.
