Who Can Take the NPORS Dozer Course?
You do not need to be an experienced dozer operator to enrol. We can start with the basics and build up your practical ability over the course.
The N215 programme is commonly booked by:

Novice Dozer Training
The novice course starts with machine familiarisation, safety checks and basic control exercises. As your control improves, you will move on to blade work, material placement and operating over different ground conditions.
The instructor will not rush you through the practical part simply to meet a fixed timetable. You need to be able to complete the required tasks consistently before progressing to the assessment.
Experienced Operator Course
This option is aimed at people who have previously operated a dozer but would benefit from preparation before the test.
You may be comfortable moving and spreading material but less familiar with the terminology used during an NPORS assessment. Alternatively, you might need to improve your pre-use inspection, attachment procedure or approach to working near slopes and edges.
The training focuses on those gaps rather than repeating basic skills unnecessarily.
Refresher Training
A refresher can be arranged when an operator has not used a dozer recently or wants to correct habits picked up in the workplace.
It is also useful when an employer wants to make sure that an operator is following current site procedures before returning to regular dozer duties.
Test-Only Assessment
Experienced operators may be able to complete the N215 assessment without taking a training course first.
To use this option, you should be able to inspect, prepare and operate the machine without coaching. You will also be expected to understand work-area hazards, blade settings, different ground conditions, attachment security and the correct shutdown procedure.

What Does NPORS N215 Dozer Training Cover?
The course begins with the machine itself. You will look at the main components, controls, warning systems and information in the manufacturer’s handbook. You will also learn how to carry out pre-operational and running checks and what to do when a defect is found.
Before starting an operating task, the work area must be checked. Ground condition, visibility, overhead cables, underground services, edges, ramps, stockpiles and nearby workers can all affect how the job should be approached.
The practical element can cover:

The NPORS N215 Assessment
The assessment includes theory and practical elements.
During the practical test, you will need to show that you can check the dozer, prepare it for work and complete the required operating tasks without unsafe actions or instructor assistance. Good control is important, but the assessor will also look at your observations, judgement and response to the conditions around you.
You may be asked to explain why a particular procedure is necessary. This could include the way you position the blade, how you approach a slope or what action you would take after finding a defect.
Candidates on the test-only route are assessed to the same standard as those who complete novice or refresher training.
Dozer Transport and Attachments
The N215 syllabus includes the storage and transport of dozer attachments. Where attachments are used, the operator needs to understand compatibility, connection points, hydraulic hoses, securing arrangements and the hazards involved when fitting or removing an implement.
You will also cover the principles of preparing a dozer for transportation, including correct positioning, cleanliness, security and reference to the manufacturer’s instructions.

How Long Does the NPORS N215 Dozer Course Take?
Course duration is based on experience rather than job title alone.
Someone who has operated other tracked plant may become familiar with the controls quickly but still need time to develop accurate blade work. An operator with years of dozer experience might only need a short refresher or the assessment itself.

NPORS Dozer Card Options
Passing the N215 assessment allows the Dozer category to be added to the relevant NPORS registration. The card you require will depend on your work and whether you hold the applicable vocational qualification.
Traditional NPORS Operator Card
The Traditional NPORS route is generally used outside the construction sector where an operator card displaying the CSCS logo is not required.
A Traditional registration can be issued for either 3 or 5 years. The period is agreed between the operator or employer and the training provider.
NPORS CSCS Trained Operator Card
Operators working in construction who do not yet hold the relevant NVQ or SVQ will normally receive the red NPORS CSCS Trained Operator Card.
It is valid for 2 years. During that period, the operator must complete the applicable vocational qualification to move to the Competent Operator Card.
Applicants must also meet the current Health, Safety and Environment test requirements.
NPORS CSCS Competent Operator Card
The blue Competent Operator Card is available to operators who have passed the plant assessment and hold the required NVQ or SVQ units for the category.
It is valid for 5 years and is issued with an operator logbook or CPD record.

Is an NPORS Dozer Ticket a Dozer Licence?
Operators often search for a dozer licence, bulldozer licence or dozer ticket. These are common industry terms, but the result of the NPORS process is an operator card or registration showing the N215 Dozer category. It is not a government-issued driving licence.
An NPORS card provides evidence that the operator has completed the relevant training or testing requirements. Individual contractors and sites may still have their own rules, so it is sensible to check which card scheme they accept before booking.
